View Full Version : SRS light is on

According to my mechanic, he can't reset the SRS light, it came on because he left my cabin light on the whole night and flatten the battery, and for some reason the SRS light is now on.
I have tried resetting the ECU, but the SRS light stays on. Can this be an actual fault or does these error codes stay in the ECU even though it's been reset by disconnecting battery?
Has anyone else had this problem before? how did you fix it?
My mechanic said I need to take it to Mitsu dealer for a reset... is this going to cost me an arm and a leg?
If there is a fault or the ECU has registered a fault, then it can only be cleared by someone who has the diag software. (Mitsu Dealer)
If it costs anything, then it should be paid by the mechanic for fudging up..
As for costing lots.. It shouldnt.. They just plug in to the loom, and clear the fault code.

I just had a new Cruise Control ECU go in my KH.
I put the unit in myself, but had to go to Mitsi to reset the ECU.
The have to connect up the MUT-II.
Cost me $30.
So not expensive, but, yeh, get your mechanic to pay! lol

another question, just because the fault light is on, assuming the fault was just caused by a low voltage during the battery drain, and the air bag is still functional, the air bag will still deploy during frontal or rear impact right?

Check this page (http://www.wermspowke.net/wiki/index.php/Engine#How_can_I_read_a_fault_code_from_the_ECU_wi thout_a_MUT-II.3F) for a guide on how to find out if your ECU has a fault code raised.
From a quick read through the workshop manual, SRS related codes to watch for are 43 and 44.

Not so.. the MMAL workshop manual lists two ways for clearing a fault code. Either with a MUT-II or by disconnecting the battery for more than 10 seconds.
If you're still getting a code after that, the problem probably still exists.

ahh ok.
I had to get the service spanner cleared from a dealer, even after unplugging the battery for 30 minutes.
I just assumed it was the same for most codes. my bad!

The spanner is an interesting one.. haven't been able to find it in the manual so far, but I'm curious to check if there's a way to clear it. I believe it goes away after 5000km anyway.

Yeah it does, well thats what they said..
(I got my services done early on the VRX when i owned it)
Hold down the up or down button (forget which), turn on ignition and keep holding till spanner goes away. As for SRS no idea, you'd probably want it checked though.

I don't think a cabin light will flatten a battery overnight without a problem with the battery or charging system.
These batteries have 50-90 Amp/hours when charged. A cabin light would be 5-10 watts (0.41-0.83 Amps), so it should take 60 to 220 hours to flatten a charged battery???

A cabin light will do it. I left a map light for 8 hours and my car needed to be jump started.
As for the SRS light mine is on aswell and has been for the last 6 months.

LOL I'm glad someone else is in the same boat as me! I can't be bothered taking it to Mitsu, From my little knowledge of Air bag systems, unless it's gone off already, the deployment mechanism should function quite reliably, the SRS light could be a ECU thing. But in an event of a frontal or rear, Air bags should deploy

And in they dont?
Are you willing to risk your life and others because youre too lazy to go to a Mitsu dealership and have them clear the error?

That's a huge assumption. The error codes I mentioned above (43 and 44) can both be caused by either a faulty wiring harness or a completely busted SRS ECU. Sounds reasonable that either of those problems could prevent the air bag from deploying.

That's a pretty bad attitude mate. You dont know for certain that the airbags would deploy, are you willing to take the risk over a 5 min visit to a mits dealership?

I agree, I should make more of an effort to get it checked out, but I think you guys have blown this a bit too much, Not having air bags does not automatically mean life or death in accidents. There are a lot of bad things that air bags can do to us as well, there are plenty of magnas without air bags, some people even go to the trouble of removing their driver side air bags... It ultimately comes down to the decisions you make on the road that places you situations that will see an air bag beneficial. Well I'm sure no one wants to be in the situation that their Air bags go off, knowing that your air bags might not be working might in fact encourage safer driving? :p haha. I'm just debating for the sake of debating.
I take your point, I should get it checked out ASAP.

Driving your car on the road IS one of the most signicicant decisions in where you will need one, it takes a split second for an oncoming driver to fall asleep at the wheel and move into your lane taking you out head on.
If you like your changes of surviving better without an airbag as opposed to having one, then that's your view :).
not trying to tell you off or trying to argue with you, would just like to see you safe and not another statistic :).

Yeah, the interior light shouldn't flatten the battery overnight, but still its something I wouldn't want to do! Car batteries only last about 2 yrs anyway, depending on their use. Certainly wouldn't worry about cheap batteries/those from overseas as theres no guarantee they'll last with our roads etc. Batteries like Exide/Yuasu/Century etc. are reliable. Anyway despite your SRS problem go and get a load test done on the battery! The tests are free (if they're not then they're ripping you off), and replace it. The computers can be sensitive to low voltages. I had a crook alternator in my TP (I know thats a lot older!), and the battery had that smaller charge in it that the lights on the dashboard didn't work at all! but everything else did, headlights, interior lights, radio, car started straight away etc. The computers are sensitive to voltage/power problems.
Have you checked the fuses/relays?
