Hello magnabuff and all who delve into the innards of 2.6 mister*****ies:nuts: lol
i have often lost the hydraulic tappets(pesky little things) so now as I am unbolting the tappets I cut 50 mm sections of bike tube(small dia.) and slip it over the tappets as they become loose enough.reverse for assembly, hope this is a help!! LOFTY

hey buffy, have you ever thought of looking into starting your own site and making a 1st gen FAQ page, similar to the 3rd gen faq? :D

Magna buff,
I had the same problem with the tappets falling out. anyway I replaced the lot with new ones when I rebuilt. Installed thus:
1. submerged tappet and tappet rocker arm into a bath of diesel.
2. shake them submerged til no bubbles come out.
3. While still submerged, insert a needle into the hole in the top of the tappet and pushing down on the tappet, pump it up about 10 times. When you take out the pin it should have no travel when pumped. KEEP SUBMERGED.
4. Now, while still submerged, place the tappet into the tappet arm.
5. While holding the assembly together, remove it from the diesel bath, pat reasonably dry with a lint free cloth.
6. while still holding it together wrap some elec tape around the tappet and rocker arm to keep it in.
7. Install on to the rocker shaft, when you bolt down the shaft assembly, do up the bolts til the tappets are all JUST TOUCHING the valve stems.
8. Remove the tape, bolt down to specs.
9. ENJOY, you should have no tappet noise at all, and a nice smooth rev sound.

Good idea, Lofty, I have been using strips of plastic shopping bags, I'll change to the tube idea

Magnabuff,
I had the timing of the dizzy out by one tooth on my last two rebuilds!! Silly me! It only takes a second to realise when you go to start up for the first time! And a minute to rectify. Hope all is well with you!!

New tappets are $11 each @ Bursons (In Hoppers Crossing anyway that is) well worth it if you inspect the tips of your old ones you find that they are pitted.
