Hey mannix !
What that plastic bar is: its a saftey devise so you must depress the gear shift knob so you can not accidently push the shift up into reverse or park when your driving along !
Its only a 4 millimeter roundish plastic white strip like a piece of spagetti !
If im correct at the moment you can only select 1,2,3,4, and netral !
If you undo the gear nob with the screw at the front botom of the gear nob you may be able to manualy (with the longest piece) push the plastic piece down enough to put it in reverse or park ! I had the knob button break before and I know it takes a bit of preasure to push the plastic bit down ! Just go to mitsubishi or wreckers and get a new one !

It depends where it has snapped. I snapped the end off one on a customers car once. I just found a metal rod the same thickness and cut it to size and put that in there. From memory there is a shaft that holds it in place.
If its unfixable though you might want to replace it completely.
edit - ok im too late disregard that
