View Full Version : Low Boost Turbo Set-up?

I see there are a few turbocharged 3rd gen Magnas around the place

Has anyone tested whether the standard management system will cope with a LOW BOOST application (maybe 4 - 6 psi)?

I know a programmable management system will give better results, but at very low boost levels there's a chance the standard management will maintain suitable mixtures and detonation-free ignition timing.

Anyone have any experiences or info?

AFAIK, the stock magna internals would probably cope with 6-8 PSI

However if your talking about running 4 PSI with no piggy back ECU? I doubt it... even 4 psi is a signifficant boost in air being fed and I doubt the stock ECU would take it. Hell even an inlet manifold with ram tubes provides too much for the ECU to deal with. So im going to go ahead and say no, 4 psi would not work without some custom computer work.

if ya gonna turbo then go and get the damn emanage or haltech its only like 1.2k whereas the turbo will cost ya 4x that easy

Mixture wise you're probably ok as the MAF will meter the extra air and compensate with fuel, but there is no knock sensor in the 3rd gen engine so detonation free ignition timing may cause you problems. All the near stock N/A cars that have had after market piggy backs added have found that there isn't much scope for extra ignition advance.

What I mean by that is that the engine is running pretty close to the border of detonation as it is.

Thanks for that cthulhu

Interesting that these engines can't tolerate much more ignition advance (I assume while remaining on normal unleaded fuel).

Obviously, the engine's 9:1 comp ratio can be run without knock sensor feedback while using normal unleaded fuel. With 95 - 98 RON fuel, I reckon it might be possible to get away with just a few psi boost - and for those rare occassions where you really MUST fill with normal unleaded, it means driving gently (as you would in any factory turbo car)

Anyone with more experiences to offer?

Hey,

I got told by RPM Performance that the stock ECU will s@#t itsself when it runs up to 4 psi of boost. I was reccomended a Greddy E - Manage.

Dont wanna be rude mate,
but do a search, this topic has been covered many times on the forums.

Mate if your gonna go with low boost turbo then have a look on ebay i saw a greddy emange not to long ago for like $350 apparantly never used! you will definitly need to replace or chip the ECU.

Not only will the factory ECU not be up to the task, but the fuel system will be on the "ragged edge" (I've been told by someone whos built multiple turbo magnas that you won't be able to achieve "2psi of boost" with the standard fuel injectors), which makes not running a programable ECU even more dangerous, because you can't monitor injector duty cycle or air/fuel ratios.

As an example of a low boost application, look at the sprintex supercharger kits. Got a sneaking suspision they only produce 4psi of boost, and the kit includes a piggyback ecu (of some description), and utilises an extra fuel injector.

Having said that - check back with me in about a month, and I'll be able to tell you exactly how much boost a 3.5L can sustain without installing upgraded injectors  .

What about booya? He was making ludicrous power with standard 3.5l injectors. Sure he had big pumps but would it make that much difference.

..GONE..

I believe BOoya was running a 3L with 3.5L injectors.

And 2 700hp fuel pumps

Well pumps arent nearly as expensive as injectors.
