Hey guys,

Recently bought a 04' TL VRX AWD with the 'premium' stereo in it (pics included for your viewing). Just upgrading some to some nice audio as it was a distinct downgrade from what I had.

20905

20908

So anyways, purchased myself some new soundstream speakers, specs as follows.

- SST6.9 - 2 Way 6x9's rated @ 150W RMS
- XSC.6 - 6.5 inch Splits rated @ 150W RMS

I've had a magna before (3rd gen) so i know the ins and outs of installing them, however, the magnets on these bad boys are quite large so im not sure if they are going to fit both in the doors and in the parcel. In the doors shouldnt be too bad as I could just get spacers id imagine, but in the rear the metal rod that runs directly below the parcel could cause headaches i think.

So my question, has anyone ever installed these speakers into a TL before adn would know if they fit, or alternatively, know how I could fit them?

Cheers,
Chris

I managed to get some Pioneer TS-A6981S 420W 6X9s in the rear shelf - they have a mounting depth of 86mm. They fitted (with bolts instead of Mitu's dumb-ass screws) but I had to put some urethane foam tubing on the boot torsion bars where they met the side of the magnet. Anything longer and you'd have to get gas struts fitted I should think.

Righty has the same setup.

I too have the sst6.9 rears, you will need to put something between its magnet the the boot struts as mentioned above. Great setup. How much do they cost in AUS by the way?? You will need an amp of course, you do have one, right?

oh, by the way, i have a TJ, righty i think has a 99 model magna. I think the TL isn't much of a difference.

yup as ramy said, they will fit, but will rub on the boot struts.. i personally didn't even notice it untill ramy pointed it out! haha. The components wll fit fine, however (not sure on that series, but i know mine did) they tweeters will prob have to be mounted where your current 4" speakers are (just up on the dash rather than in the tweeter pod) you can just cut and cover the wires of your tweeter, or do what i did today and was unplug them from the mitsu plug that you will fnid behind the door trim (yes, you need to take the whole trim off for this!) but then that way you can always plug them back in. I took my tweeters out today because the loose wires were rattling away inside the pod, haha.
anyway, all should be fine, go for gold son!

Couldn't you put some type of spacer between the speakers rim and the parcel shelf?

If it's only rubbing on the struts, then even 5mm mdf would make a huge difference.

I think you'll need much more than 5mm. those speakers have pretty big magnets.

If the magnet is only 'rubbing' on the struts, then not much of a spacer is needed.
Being under the stock parcel tray cover, just use something thicker - it wont be seen anyway.
That way you wont have any rubbing, or other stuff tied up to, or in between your struts.

I was jsut looking at mine again ramy, Have ya tried just sticking a slice of cardboard with some electrical tape between them? it'll stop the magnet and bars rattleing together?

The ratelling isn't coming from the magnet and bar as the magnet has a rubber around it which prevents the ratteling. the vibration travels through the bar and it rattles at the bar tips. does that make sense. :doubt:

so i think putting something in between them won't help much. better tie the 2 bars together, that way they will stay a bit away from the magnet.

I still say put the spacer and avoid the magnets hitting the struts in the first place!

Hey guys, thanks for your response.

Yes they are very big magnets. I think spacers should be the best to stop the magnet touching the bar. How about the splits I purchased? Any ideas if they will need a spacer also?

These should be going in sometime in the future when I get a nice and powerful amp and have the time to install them. The only reason I purchased the speakers so quickly was because I know the owner of an auto shop so picked both 6x9's and splits up for only $350.
