500 w speakers?
Speakers dont produce power, amplifiers do.
I doubt your 6x9's can handle 500 w rms, more likely that is their peak power rating. Do you have any RMS figures?
Similarly, no headunit produces 400w. Or even 200 w.
More like 17 watt x 4 RMS.
At the end of the day, a headunit will play your 6x9's fine. Just keep in mind you are trying to run a tiny little amp beyond its potential if you plan on cranking them. In which case an amplifier might be warranted.

a couple of things,
i doubt your 6x9's are true 500W i might be mistaken though
so what brand name model number are they ?
secondly Most Head Units will only put out around 50W a channel and again it wont be a true 50W
what head unit do you currently have ? and what front speakers do you currently have ?
do you have any subs amps installed already ?
If you need to ask if u can install an amp yourself you probably cant.
Post all the information i have just asked for up and then well go from there.

If you dont mind spending a few hours doing some research into doing this, yes, you can do it yourself, but if you really cant be bothered learning how to do it properly just get someone to install it for you. Remeber taking shortcuts in installing an amp can lead to car on fire.
connect em up to the headunit and see if its loud enough (9 times outta 10 its no)
if not have a look for some amps
