I am looking for a car and I really like the Magna, but alot of people that I talk to tell me that it is a problematic car? Is this true?

Looking for used 2-4 year old Magna what do you recommend and what should I look out for?

Look for a MANUAL TE/TF 3L V6 Magna.. Preferably Black.. :P

Its a manual.. so there's no real hassles with the transmission or anything, plus you have the added ability of being able to modify your car further.. unlike someone with an auto, who are limited to the amount of power the auto transmission is able to take!

Thats my recommendation and reasoning.. Doing a friends assignment.. not a good idea.. :S

the early TE/TFs did have some minor problems with the Auto Trans.

if you can find a Manual, your

a) very lucky man
b) very lucky man
c) car wont have any 'transmission' problems

things to look for when buying a 2nd Hand magna is
a) CV joints
b) CV joints
c) CV joints

a, b and c are the most common 'problems' with a magna, but arnt expensive to fix, nor are 'life threatning' mechanical problem.

oh, and get a V6, dont bother with those 4cl magnas ;)

Drive safe!

My 3year-old-this-month TJ has had virtually no problems. No auto problems for me. Well not yet anyway! </me prays>

Well expect for a window leak & one of the electric windows breaking. But warrenty is good :)

Okay, thanks for the replys - I take it that if I wanted an auto, it would have to be 3 liters and not the 3.5 - drats!

How much to change the CV joints if necessary?

Expect a window leak - known fault with a particular window?

Power window problem? Is this a cable system?

KJ GTV has the right idea there. Definately go the manual (if you can source one), I got a 98 TF and the Auto box is the only thing I'm having any issues with. Otherwise, IMHO........there is no better car in the world :D

Magna's...........ROCK!

Yeah, you gotta love the shape. Pity they don't have the 3L V6 version of the Galant in Aus. It's smaller, but boy is that a looker!

Will likely have to go with an auto, as this would be the family car.

How is the fit and finish of the car? Any electrical problems?

Are spares expensive?

Manual is more fun, more responsive and looses less power but there's nothing wrong in hiking the power in the auto unless you're talking forced induction. I doubt any of the NA mods would destry it and if it did, I'd rethink your driving style.

That's not forced induction, forced induction is supercharging, or turbocharging...and (depending on how you look at it) Nitrousoxide.

I drive a TH 3.5 Auto and I'm extremely happy with the inevecs clever auto, yeh I would like a manual but it aint.
The only other thing is if you want to tow go with the 3.5 as its got heaps of pull, I hired a dingo (small Bobcat) and towed it home and i was amazed at how much punch the car still had when climbing hills.
one more thing lets face it the TH is the best looking Magna ever Built :)

Looking at the 3 or 3.5 auto, used. Any particular year I should avoid?

Will have to be 3-4 years old at best due to budget constraints!

Avoid the te autos like the plague!!!

They are known for auto and ecu problems. I have had my tf for almost 2 years, thrashing the shitter out of the auto and she is still goin strong (Not sure for how much longer tho :p touch wood)

Good luck on ur purchase!!

Yeah I had a te for about 18 months and it needed about 3-4k worth of repairs to the before mentioned auto tranny and ecu when it got traded :)

it all depends on how you drive it though, i flog the guts out of my ts and the auto is still holdin up ok at 160 000ks, and to top that for the first 80 000 she was a rental!

i have heard about the te transmisson problems but im pretty sure they just updated the software and it was all good,

they are like any car, if you drive it into the ground then expect the transmission to give you trouble, i was talking to a guy in the navy once, they had a vx commo that was the ships car or something and they killed the box in it in 10 - 15 000ks! it was a while ago so it could have been less than that!

really they are only going to give you problems if you give em a reason to,

But thats no fun

although we are talking TE's that came out in 1996 - if there were any tanny problems in the TE's it would have shown up and been fixed by now...
im not so sure it would still be a problem?!

otherwise, go the 3.5 ;)

Go TF onwards, Liquidhotmagna has proven the reverse gear is the strongest in the drive train lol, usually at about 60kmh in circles lol

When a Magna Stuffs up.... 90% of the time the blame is on the driver..

I think the only problem with the newer auto boxes is with the auto oil your dealership puts in it..

I was reading on a site that each car performs differently to the type of transmision oil.

I found that my car does slip on some gears and from readin the site plus the fact i have no idea on my cars history it seems to be that problem?

And as mitsubishi motors told me just do a full Tranny oil change to the proper Mitsu certified oil!!

My car is a tf and with an exaust and a few other minor mods im sure it will kick more than the datsuns im beating right now :)

(again driver is to blame!!<-- me!)

My car is a nice clean car with 74000km's on the clock and drives a dream... most of the time :P

But with a used car you will always get minor problems! (i think)

I'm still with the either a TE or TF Manual - Must be manual. The 3L is more of a challenge to bring the power up to that of the TJ RalliArts. Once you do that.. You know you have a serious machine on your hands!
The sky is limit.. well not really.. more like your wallet is but you get the picture!
