ok, ive been hearing this for quite a while now.. never really been worried about it..

but when i drive along, with the window down/sunroof open i can hear a hissing sound which sounds like it is coming from the front left hand wheel..

now, I normally hear this when i drive down a street with shops/buildings either side as the sound echos.. sound almost like a small hole in the tyre and air is leaking out, and the faster i go, the faster the hissing occurs..

anyone else noticed this?? is it anything to be concerned about??

thanks guys

Wouldn't be this would it? Since you're auto you wouldn't notice the noise it makes when you change gears. It's an intake noise, and I've narrowed it down to when the engine is under high vac and the temperature of the plastic components in the intake. Hotter plastic + more vac = more noise, when you suddenly lift off the throttle you get a blow off valve noise too.

i dont think it would be.. it doesnt do it when i change gears.. its more ofd a constant noise..

goes hiss-hiss-hiss-hiss and the slower i go, the furhter the hisses are apart, the faster, the quicker they hiss.. if you get me..

when im stopped, no hiss.. and i presume it keeps going, but when wind/road noise gets up and i get faster, i cant hear it..

that sounds like it could possibly be the handbrake shoes the sometimes stick,

when u hear the hissing sound try slightly lifting the handbrake so that it just engages and then release and see if it goes away

oh no! there was a ralliart in at work for about 2 weeks, 1/2 the thing was pulled to bits and sat in the workshop for 2 weeks because their gearbox went..:doubt:

to me though, it dosnt sound gear-box related.. ill enquire though.. sounds more of a wheel/bearing issue.. what ever it is ill have it fixed before the warranty runs out..

oh, the hand brake thing.. i thought it could of been that.. not the case, thanks anyway

Sounds like the brakes. Try pulling the handbrake a little as you drive along. Or just drive long and ride the brake gently with your left foot while accelerating. See if that stops the noise.

Sure its not something simple like a rusty disc? Ride the brakes down a hill at 40ks or something to wear it clean.

well i enquired at work, they seem to think it is wheel bearings..

and something today came to mind.. when i got the car, that tyre was exremely worn on the outter side.. (previous owner hit a kurb, busted the rim and tyre, had them replaced but didnt get a wheel alignment) so it was driven around for X amount of kms without an alignment, then i had it done, now the hissing has started..

will get them replaced next service and that should put a stop to it..:D

its jus the pads touchin the disc every now and then or the handbrake shoes. have noticed a few new cars do em and mine is doin that to. its not the bearing coz that will be making viberatin noise :D

you should only hear a bearing noise when you turn a corner and put load on the bearing, but hey changing bearings wouldnt hurt, if its warranty theres no real problem,

mine made the same noise, then i had the hand break shoes replaced. cost me nothing was still under new car warranty. they said it was a fairly common prob.

good afternoon, just thought i would throw my two cents in. i have just bought a 1999 th manual sedan with only 80000 on the clock and i also hear a hissing (whistling sound) when the windows down. i traced it down to the gap between the side of the car and the mirror. if you put your hand there and block the gap the noise stops. it might help you.

yeah, ive noticed that too.. the seals on the windows are crap and dont seal up 100% where the glass meets the plastic bit near the mirror (where the tweeters go)..

but it isnt that noise:P

work said it *COULD* be bearings, handbrake shoes, calliper/pad rubbing on rotor or many other things, until they have a look at it, the wont know..

they are hopefully gonna look at it tomorrow if they get a quiet(ish) moment..

Bringing an old thread to life.... but i have had this hissing sound since i bought the car. I've had the noise ever since i had new brakes put on which was about 2 weeks after i bought it. I went back to the mechanic and he said that its just the handbrake shoes and they just do that. Im just wondering, when i took the car to get the service done he told me that there was nothing left on the brakes. It was down to the metal, i got the car yard to pay for the brakes as they sold it without any but im wondering since they were down to the metal could this have damaged the brakes in some way and making them rub on something?

Nope not likely, other then maybe the rotor, that hissing sound is more then likey just the brake pads rubbing on the rotor, maybe a semi-stuck caliper?

Icebox- your problem is more then likely the handbrake issue.
