hey all, currently im aware that my gear box is stuffed, 2nd gear in the auto to be prescise. this is a 2.6 tr. im also aware that i need to replace the rear main seal between the engine and the gearbox which is a bit of a pain so im waiting till i get my gearbox replaced (btw anyone know cheaper than $650 fitted? for a rebuilt one that is). but lately ive been getting clicking sounds when i turn while the car is cold. is this cause by lack of gearbox oil? if it is, which gearbox oil do you guys recommend and where is it sold? i just wanna keep it going for a bit till i can afford to get gearbox replaced. cheers
Edit: is there any possible way to fit a 6cyl gearbox into the 4cyl tr? i heard they are much stronger boxes

Sounds like you need CV joints as well ?

My 1993 TR (manual) does exactly the same thing and it's definitely the CV joints - which I have to get off my butt to take it to the mechanic.

Mate $650 for a rebuild fitted ? are you sure?
maybe for the rebuild and parts (even then) but labour to pull it out and put it all back I doubt its only $650 - looking at a grand at least. Unless you know the mechanics ?
btw, can I ask who quoted you that ?

I have a ticking noise in my 93' TR Magna aswell, when I start it cold, it just sounds like a belt or something that's rotating, not being lubricated enough, after about 3-5minutes it stops, so i'm not sure.

That would be your lifters making that noise

i called the magna wrecking place in dandenong in vic, dont know how good/dodgy they are, but he definitely said that it was $650 fitted, that was as about 6 months ago'
how much would CV joints cost?

They are easy to do your self but that bolt that holds the CV to the wheel is a pain to loosen.
ive been hearing a ticking on my gen3 recently too, just after i start the engine for about 15 seconds, then stops. Not CV joints cus my car isnt moving yet.

now THOSE would be your lifters before they get the oil through them, then they stop. its pretty common i get that too, but this one that i posted about was clicking when i was turning.. so CV joints are possible.. have there been recent posts on changing them? sorry im really too lazy to have a look, i have other things on my mind atm
wouldnt it do that all the time even when the car is warm if it were the cv joints?

This is a common noise in lots of motors in lots of cars due to the oil draining into the sump overnight and it being dry up top, just takes a little while for them to fill with oil

The CV joints only click when you are turning or if they are real bad even when you are going in a straight line. It is the lifters if it is only while you first turn on the car as previous members are suggested its because if the low oil pressure when all the oil drains to the bottom.
CVs arn't too hard to change.
You need to take off the drive shaft nut (it has a split pin aswel) I use a rattle gun. can still be quite difficult even with this help so sometimes putting a smaller socket on top of nut and giving it a firm tap to loosen up the nut (also some wd40 works a dream)
Then you must pop out the drive shafts i use a long screw driver (helps if you have two ppl, one to turn the drive shaft while you pop the shaft end over a c type clip that holds it in).
The cv joint is under the cv boot.
I'm sure there are many other threads telling how to do this. Just PM me if you need any help with the TR-TS as i'v changed CV's CV boots and drive shafts in them a couple of times.

What have members paid for reco'd or new shafts ? very curios.
I get a creaking noise when car is in motion during a turn on the drivers side no noise when motion is straight.
