View Full Version : I think my car is dead...

Yesterday (Thursday 13th) i was on my way to bathurst to pick the gf up for easter, and just inside bathurst at the turn off to oberon at a set of traffic lights, a 45yr old ute driving lady sandwiches me between her and the car infront of me
Thankfully the police were there at the same location for an accident that happened 5minutes before hand. so they saw everything.
Talking to the tow truck driver, he thinks my car will be written off, as it looks to be folded slightly (crease in the roof), my front of the car has been pushed in about half a foot, and the rear has been pushed in about a foot.
The engine seemed ok, as i was able to drive it off the road, but the rear of the car on the passenger side is touching the wheel now, and both rear doors are jammed :(
Something that can be see as either good or bad, is that the car infront of me, that the lady that hit pushed me into, only had some minor scratches from me bumping into her, and the lady that hit me, only had some minor scratches n a bent number plate, as she took in my tow bar :doubt:
Will fill in more details later

I dont means to be morbid but that sounds like a write off to me. Make sure you get all ya stuff out of it or the tow guys will swipe everything.:D

i'm gonna agree with ol' fart here.
when i crashed my 1st gen the first time all it needed was new front bumper, nose piece, bonnet, radiator supports, headlight and some panel beating on the guards. i only just managed to get insurance to fix it by having the repairer use 2nd hand parts and some spares i had laying around. just fixing that the quote was nearly 3.5k.
if u have a crease in the roof, hate to tell u, but unless u've got an agreed value policy for like 10k, she's gone.
and again to agree with ol' fart (its ok i can agree twice in a day, the dementia will make him forget atleast 1 so he won't get a big head :D ) get everything u can out of the car as soon as u can. even any stereo u have, cuz once the insurance comp gets their hands on it, u've got no chance of getting it back.

Bad luck, it is sure to be a right-off.
Hope no one says anything about the dark tail lights, it looked to be a nice original car which insurace will get another just as good.
And yea, get the streo out and try to get the louvers off the back, and anything other add-ons.
Start looking for another car, will you get another gen one? Or even a Magna?

Hey Terror...
Sorry to hear man. That intersection is a bad one - I've seen two HAPPEN (not just gone past it after the fact) and I don't even live in Bathurst! The coppers already being there is testament to that fact.
I take it the GF was at Uni? Hope you got home okay.
Number one thing is that you are okay, and number two is that cars CAN be replaced.
Sorry to see the 61kW beast from the Dyno day gone.
Chin up, best of luck.

... 45yr old ute driving lady sandwiches me between her and the car infront of me ... looks to be folded slightly (crease in the roof), my front of the car has been pushed in about half a foot, and the rear has been pushed in about a foot... rear of the car on the passenger side is touching the wheel now, and both rear doors are jammed
Bad news #1... yup, shell structural integrity has been breached - your car is a writeoff.
Something that can be see as either good or bad, is that the car infront of me, that the lady that hit pushed me into, only had some minor scratches from me bumping into her
Bad news #2... hope you've Insurance, 'cos usually you'll be paying damages for the guy in front of you.

i asked the cops at the scene about that at the time, and they assured me that the lady that hit me into the car infront of me, would be at fault for any cost to the car infront of me.
Thanks for the support guys, even tho it wasnt that great of a car, i was still attached to it, so its tough :(
Thanks for the heads up about getting my stuff out before the insurance ppl get at it, ill grab my seat covers n stereo n speakers, dont know if ill be able to get the extractors out of it, but as someone above said about possibly buying it off the insurance ppl so i can sell the parts off to anyone that wants them, n give the rest away as spares (or to the wreakers)
I dont have any insurance, but the cops said that didnt matter as i wasnt at fault, but they strongly recommended that i at least get 3rd party :P
Hopefully i can bug the smash repair place (where its sitting atm) to let me in tomorrow, i hope theyre open tomorrow :doubt: (well saturday, which is technically today :P)
i hit a car in my old gen1. The bumper was off, radiator was dislodged and bonnet was bent, and was also a right off.

The cops AIN'T the woman's insurance company claims assessor... who definitely won't
be signing off to pay for the damage your car caused to the car in front of your pileup.
hehe, we've had a lot of contact with insurance claims people... our old TN has had
insurance-sponsored repairs totalling 136% of original purchase price over the years.
(with hindsight would have been cheaper for them to writeoff 100% lol )
I dont have any insurance, but the cops said that didnt matter as i wasnt at fault, but they strongly recommended that i at least get 3rd party :P
Third party property will cover the damage your car made if it got
pushed into someone else in an pileup.
In short, the woman that "caused" the pileup, her insurance will only pay for the
rear damage to car she hit directly ... and nobody else. Everyone else pays for the
car they got pushed into, and the only guy that won't be out of pocket is
the last guy in front who didn't get any frontal damage.

umm thats incorrect, from the insurance work i do at work, the last pile up i saw had the person at the end (the last on involved) pay for the entire accident, eg everycar as hitting the back of the last car causes more damage from pushing the other cars into each other

yeah... its actually the rear car that cops the lot. The insurance comp can't say anything about it, legally the rear car is classed as the fault of the accident for failing to leave sufficient room.
so if ur the last car in a 20 car pile up on the freeway..... sucks to be u :P

No, it would suck to be their insurer - unless they didn't have insurance, THEN it would suck to be the last car :)

That's not true either.

Driving without any insurance = crazy.
unless you have a good healthy savings account($30,000), which would beat the purpose of paying $1000 for insurance then using your own cash..
I would get the cops to provide a statement of what they have seen. OR if I was the car in front and the insurance refused to pay me because of the first ladies fault, I would sue you for damages. (how any human thinks)

anyone able to give me an idea of the things i need to do to get my money for my dead car?
so far all ive been told is, ring the lady that hit me, and get the insurance claim number, and the cops told me on the day to visit em to get the incident number.
so far i have the incident number off the police, but i havent bothered to call the lady as i would like to know what i do after i get the claim number off her?
