I've just bought a TL LS wagon in Grange to replace the TS Advance I've had for 6 years. I want to replace the standard 15 inch alloys with 17 inch (and 7-8 inch wide) alloys. First choice would be the 5 spoke TL VRX rims. Or even the TJ VRX rims. Any ideas? The car feels just a little too heavy and powerfull for the 205/65 tires to cope with.

Gday mate, congrads on your first post.
Yeah, you would benefit from a better size, width and quality rubber. Getting into a 17 inch size will probably set you back about $1k no matter how you look at it (rubber isnt cheap, even if the rims are - especially for the Mitsubishi's favoured 225/50/17s - some of the guys have 235/45/17s, which have more brands to choose from, but 235s are illegal to fit to a 7.0 inch rim, so you would need at least 17x7.5s. Ive had a tyre place saying they only fit 235s to 17x8s
Bang for your buck would be putting some 16x7s. These go for around about $400, and the rubber per tyre is much cheaper - 215/60/R16s though - I'll probably be getting rid of some TJ sports rims in that size soon - not that Im giving you some ulterior motive, if you can spare the 1 gorilla, go the 17s.

Don't know where you pulled this from
Check this link: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
I've got 235/45/17 on my 17x7's, and they're fine; the tyre even says do not mount on 7.5" rim. The optional alloys on commodores and falcons are both 17x7's with 235/45/17's. This tyre is becoming very common and therefore the price is dropping quickly too.
Edit: stock rims/tyres are 205/65/15, put these numbers into that link I gave you and look for yourself.

Commodore and falcon 17inchers are 8 inches wide.
Piv, this has been covered so many times before, the issue has nothing to do with the odometer, it has to do with the width of the tyre.
These are apparently the legal requirements.
tyre size rim size
205/65/15 5.5-7.5
215/60/16 6.0-7.5
225/50/17 6.0-7.5
235/45/17 7.5-9.0
235/40/18 8.0-9.5

Copycat!! Nah seriously they go well on the car and i love the look myself. Good luck finding them though, they are hard to get.

Sorry if this is flogging a dead horse, but what about:
245/40/18 on 18"x8" rims? Would they be within legal, etc requirements?

Ahhh **** sorry, I stand corrected. After reading that thread it seems that Falken 235/45/17s apparently conform, which is what I have. My tyres bulge out from the rims a tad (if I scraped a gutter my rim shouldn't suffer in theory), but it doesn't look ridiculous. I've been pulled over by cops twice, both for enthusiastic driving and rims have never raised an eyebrow. I told insurance company diameter and width of rim and also tyre profile and they didn't have a problem either? I'll check load rating anyway, thanks for this.

Sorry mate, you'll have to ring a tyre shop and get them to consult their bible - specifically tell them to have a look - to find out.

Cheers for the reply's guys. TLwagon man: your white TL looks sweet. just the look I'm after.
So, do you reckon the 17 by 7 VRX are a safe bet, or an aftermarket 17 by 7.5-8 to fit the 235/45/17's?

Did you stick to the factory 225 tyres or are you running 235's? your wagon looks great.

235s have more brand names/manufacturers, hence slightly cheaper - for eg, Nankangs, Maxxis etc.
225s pretty much limit you to each manufacturer's range of pseudo-sports tyres - you know, the Falken Ziex, Bridgestone G3, Hankook K104s (which were once cheap but now a shocker)
After much sole searching I ended up with Falken Ziex 329s for $175, - its not a uni-directional tread, but they were $50 cheaper than the next tyre, the Bridgestone G3. As I had recently acquired some GTV rims, I had to get all four at once, hence the $50 became a saving of $200.
The Falken tyre is okay, not sensational, but not noisey and pretty grippy. I was trying really hard to find some Falken Ziex 512s but these have been superceeded. Still for what I paid I was pretty happy. Falken do some excellent tyres on the bang for your buck basis.
May switch back to G3s or the Falken ST-115s once these tyres need replacing.

Cheers for that info Dave.
I think I may go for aftermarket rims in 17 x 7.5 to get into the 235/45 market. Found some nice wheels including Bonspeed Intense 5 alloys (see Mustang pg92 of May 2006 Street Machine!).
As with VRwagon man; may lower the front. Althought, with my wife driving... I may need to maintain the clearance. A long snout on these TL's...
Anyone seen any other aftermarket 17's that look good on Magnas?

ROH Chicanes in 17x7.5. Look awesome on the car.....
Don't forget that most insurance companies won't let you go over a 7 inch rim on a Magna.
