View Full Version : TL VRX AWD - Normal Cornering Sounds?

Hey guys,

I've begun to notice a certain annoying quality in the handling of my VRX. When i take a corner fast, particularly on slopes etc, the wheels will screech like all hell. The car hangs on unbelievably well for such a large car which is not the problem, just the darn screeching of the tyres attracts unwanted attention.

My question is, is this normal? I'm running the factory rims and tyres (i think) which are goodyears, and i think my inflation levels may be incorrect. Can anyone clarify if the tyre pressure may be causing this or i this is just a normal thing. I think i may have grown too fond of the cornering capabilities of my WRX which doesnt make a sound.

Thanks!

Thats pretty weird. Have you got stock bridgestone's? I've got standard turanza's, nothing flash, and have not heard a screech yet. And its certainly not from lack of trying! Tried 28-32 psi front/rear to 35-35 psi. Heavy load or not, no tire noise. Maybe some else has had problems though

Im guessing its mainly pressure....and the tyres might be rubbish also.

sometimes i get a bit of tyre screech though...

but sometimes i get this buzzing sound when i take a corner too fast and drop it a gear in the wet.... dont know what that could be though

Used to get a ****load of tyre screech from the stock tyres. After changing them you really have to provoke it to make any noise. 16's have too higher profile for my liking and flex too much.

Check if they are balanced and alligned properly and try putting Nitrogen in them that gives a better tyre wear and more constant pressure and it only costs about $5 per wheel from Jax.

Doesnt nitrogen filled tyres deflate over time, and then you have to goto a tyre place to refill?

Go 36 psi all round in the AWD. If it still continues then maybe get your alignment checked but unless you have gone over a big pot hole or up a gutter at speed then they shouldnt go out like that all of a sudden.

Nitrogen filled tyres have been shown to be a waste of time and money. I wouldn't worry about it

Yeah nitrogen tyres are a ridiculos waste of money IMO. I will pump the tyres up and see what happens. Alignment is spot on and balance is awesome so it aint that.

Thanks guys.

:bowrofl: :bowrofl: A sucker for marketing huh lol
Nah Nitrogen does jack unless your tires are getting really hot (ie racing) as it does transfer heat better than air.

I reakon it's prolly low pressures that're causing the tyre squeal. Remember that the pressures on the tyre placard are for cold tyres and as the tyres are generally warm/hot when you check the pressures you need to add a couple of psi. I've found that on my current crappy Madison tyres I get the best grip from them when running hot pressures of 37 psi front and 34 psi rear. On my old Goodyears though, that did produce squeal, but had a higher and more progressive grip level I got the best grip from 35 psi front and 33 rear. The only way to find out is to try different pressures

Yeah, its just difficult putting the right pressure when the tyres are warm as it is a bit of a guessing game. I will increase the tyre pressure though and report back my findings.

Yep - they do squeal when pushed hard - I am running 38psi on the Turanzas and they are quite noisy - far too much sidewall flex, you can see asphalt marks all over the sidewalls!!!

Good fun for drifting though :)

Only speaking from a FWD running 16" Turanzas. They are much noiser on the road and prone to squealling than my old (and very good condition) 15" Toyo Transas Teo's.

PS. I'm running 35psi

Strange. Again, speaking from FWD experience - I have find the turanza 16" very quiet and extremely long lasting

I have the 18" Falken Ziex 512s on my TW VRX AWD. Don't generally make any noise whatsoever and I hammer the car round the corners. Inflated to 45psi front and 42 rear. hard, but handles a lot better.

I also find the Turanza's one the the quietest tyres i can find and boy i have had many different types on.

If cold, go 36 all round but if warm just throw a couple extra in there and go 38.

Fairly sure this will resolve the issue.

Ok just put 38PSI all round. The result was noticeable, alot less squeal and a firmer feel to the steering. I'm just guessing the remaining squeal could be attributed to the tyres and their not-so-low profile. All in all though, made quite a difference although I think I need the 17" TL VRX wheels now.
