View Full Version : High Pitch Squeel Brakes/Suspension?
Yo ladies,
OK, ive had this problem for a while now.. (like a week), when i really put my foot down, and it goes to change gears (in auto) but before it does, it kinda lets out this huge squeel thats really quite loud and i thinnnnnnnk is coming from the front right (not sure if its the left as well - but i dont think it is). Its kinda a squeel that sounds like releasing pressure.. but.. not. Its a TE auto with ABS, and had coilover suspension for about 1mth now.. brake pads are new (but i think i herd this before i got my new brake pads in).
Does this sound like a brake or suspension problem.. or a transmission problem (i doubt it is, but its when the car is at high revs about to change gears (mostly when i have just launched it) and when i know its going to hit 2nd i often release my foot off the acc and thats when the squeel occurs...
I will most likley take it down to my mehanic in a few days.. but when i want to show him whats wrong, i cant get the problem happening to show him.. ehhe.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Sounds like the classic loose fanbelt squealing noise - though of course 'Fanbelt' can mean any of the non toothed drive belts - Power steering or alternator - I'm actually not sure how many the Magna actually has!
well, i had the car serviced a few weeks ago - one thing that was changed was the fanbelt.. so that sounds pretty coincidental. So it might possibily just be loose? Are there variations in fan belts (could my mechanic put the wrong one on)...
i was just talking to sidewinder who also mentioned the various belts that are referred to as fan belts.. and i honestly cant say which one it was that they changed... but sounds possible larry, thanks for that... will definatly take it back down to him in the next few days.
i was so sure that the noise was coming from the front wheel ...is that the rough area that i should be hearing of this problem from?

Yep, drivers side is where they hide.

The belt would have streched, so yes it may be a bit loose now and need to be adjusted.
This definately does not sound like a suspension or brake pad issue.

yep, the gents are right.. i'd bet my left nut it's a loose drive belt.. get it retensioned, and all should be ok! new belts stretch ever so slightly.. so a bit of tightening will fix it!
is this something i could learn to do myself?! eager to learn more about whats under the hood than whats on it - but is it simple to tighten , or is there a specific tensioner tool? Maybe i should just watch someone do it lol.

It won't have stretched enough in only a couple of weeks, the mechanic has'nt tensioned it properly, its not hard to do, the old 90 degree of twist rule is still the safest bet, i could show you how to do it one day dee if you want

Care to elaborate!? :)

If you don't have the manufactures specs for belt deflection (the amount the belt can be pushed down when tensioned) a old rule of thumb is when tensioned, if you grab the belt with thumb and fore finger you should be able to twist the belt 90 degrees, any much more and its too loose, much lees and its too tight.

You could though from what I can tell, you need to get under the car to adjust them on the 3rd gens - and yeah they are on the driver's side inboard of the front wheel.

drive belts DO lose tension during the "run in" periods.. which is 24-48 hours! so, a nip up is all she needs! obviously at the time of fitment, the mechanic thought it was ok as it wasnt slipping.. sadly, after the belt became " old ", tension was lost, and a squeal is there when the motor is loaded up, or dead cold etc!

Dee these are easy to tighten.. ive changed the belts myself.. There two screws to fix..:P
There is two belts.. the top one is AC/Alternator and the lower belt is just power steer..:D
