View Full Version : Magna TL Ex Demo
Hi,
Dont know where to put this, so here i go.
Me and my dad has been having a discussion about ex-demo cars, he says to get a RAC check on the car, and I told him dont need to because they r ex demo.
Who is right?
Thanks

as its an ex demo your technically the first owner, therefore all the warranty starts from your purchase date so they'd be digging themselves a hole if it wasnt decent... if you know what i mean, i didnt explain that too well... lol

wrong mate.. new car warranty starts from the first day of registration.. doesnt matter if the vehicle was owned by the head fo mmal, the dealer principal, or a salesman! so, if the demo was used for a year, u only get the remainding new car warranty!

you getting from John Huges? Then they pay for the RAC anyway. I don't think there is much to worry about. Yes you can pay RAC if you wish, I didnt even get my TE RAC checked and it was fine. Can tell when you test drive and look at some usual points when buying a car.
Congrets though, I was pretty sure you were going to get one soon enough.

Incorrect, my fathers girlfriend purchased an ex demo 2003 TJ Sports, 20,000km's on the clock, was about 6-7 months old when purchased, states in the warranty book that warranty commences from the date of first registration - it also states my fathers girlfriends name as the first registered owner - the period of time a car spends as a demo doesnt interfere with new car warranty, also warranty expiration date in the book corresponds to exactly 3 years after the date she purchased it:)

Wait a sec... You state two different things here. To start with you say that the warranty starts on the day that the car was first registered then you go on to say that the warranty on your dads girlfriends car started on the day it was delivered to her even though it was @ 7 months old...Which is correct then? Or is it both?

If it was a demo and only ever driven on trade plates then yes you are the first registered owner giving you 3 yrs warranty from date of first rego. If it was registered in the dealers name and used as a demo/take home car for salesman etc then you have warranty from when they first registered it in their name, making it a demo/secondhand vehicle.
Im split in whether to get a TL VR AWD ($19800 - if I can raise that much(from a "normal car yard")) or get a ex-demo TL ES/EL ($14990) from a mitsu dealer and then get them to install the spot lights etc.

sorry to say mate, either u were misinformed by a salesman, or you are lying! i know how mitsu warranty works, trust me on that! give me the vin number of the vehicle, and i'll tell u when warranty first started, who was the original owner, any warranty claims the vehicle has had, selling dealer, key numbers, radio pin and all the other vehicle information! please pay attention all, new car waranty starts on the firsy day of registration, refer to my previous post... and nobody would drive a vehicle for 20000klms on a trade plate!
used car warranty on the other hand.. well, that starts when the new car warranty expires, if it still has any remaining!

Yep warranty starts from the car's first use, no matter the driver/owner.
This should back it up

Does mitsubishi have offer a extended new car warranty now after the 5 years, and is it factory backed or is it through a third party (for eg At audi they now use swan insurance, but they used to be factory backed which made things much easier)
does the tl come with 4-door central locking?

If that was so is an insult to TL owners as all other 3rd gens including my TE have central lock. lol What were you thinking? :bowrofl:
Don't worry too much just get your $$$$$ and you be happy. I always wanted a TL/W
My TE never had central, had to install it... but I remember one time went over to my old mans house and unlocked the car using the remote (forgot what version magna i drove) and the passanger side didnt unlock, so i had to unlock it from the drivers side.

and if this is the case, how does it explain that my 2002 Ralliart Magna, that has 3 years new car warranty, doesnt finish until June 2006?
My car was first registered on 23rd September, 2002.. It was a MMAL owned car and used as a dealer principals car at a mitsubishi dealer in SA.. They had it up until 6th of June, 2003 and did 11,000-odd kms in it.. 6th of June, 03, the owner before me bought it off this dealership and had it until 1st October, 2005 when i bought it..
So, if it had 3 years N.C.W. from he date it was originally registered (23rd Sept. 02) it should have expired on 23rd of Sept. 05.. so therefore, it shouldnt have had any warranty left on it when i bought it.. but it even says in the book that it doesnt expire until 6th June, 06.. and ive even claimed 4 or 5 things on warranty and theres never been any problems..

I think the style of central locking featured here is known as broken. But i may be wrong :P

Didnt have switches etc or anything like that, so i just installed a $40 after market one.

Back to original question now, i dont know whether to get from a "normal car yard" because of warrenty crap, or go for the lesser model because they have warrenty.

Its actually both, 1. The book does state that NCW starts from the date of first registration, and 2. my fathers girlfriends name is listed as being the first registered owner - even though it was MMAL owned and registered

RINGA, you seem to be in the same position as my fathers missus with the NCW - i find it very bizarre that so many other people have had a different experience, maybe it is the dealerships being shifty!!! - or maybe you and this other woman have been lucky!
Extended new car warranty?

I had a similar experience - I bought an ex-MMAL car that was 14 months old, and my warrenty started when MMAL first had it registered, not when I bought it.
Cheers,
Martin.

Sounds like technically/legally you don't have any new car warranty left - unless the dealer was completely shifty and MMAL thinks that the car was on the lot and held for sale, and not being used for his purposes.

i understand both sides of this.. why it should or shouldnt have warranty; but if my car went from the factory, straight to this mitsu dealer as a new car.. They then used the car (and registered it) but it hasnt really been sold to anyone.. the first time it was SOLD was when the guy before me bought it and that should be when the warranty starts.. (and it obviously did)
I dont see why they dont make the warranty period start as soon as it comes off the production line.. If the vehicle is covered for 2, 3, 4, 5 or however many years, it should be from when the vehicle was "created" or "made"
we have brand new cars at work that have been sitting there since i started (nearly 6 months ago).. this means these cars are 6 months old, and some are getting used as demo's and subsequently being driven (with a trade plate).. so, theoretically, if anything went wrong with these cars, they wouldnt be covered under warranty because the warranty period hasnt STARTED yet because they HAVENT been sold?? to me, this seems to be same case with my car, only it had plates whacked on it (still registered to MMAL though) and then the warranty should/did start when the first actual PERSON bought the car..
meh.. stupid warranties.. im not complaining.. ive claimed stuff on it even if it isnt valid..
The cars im looking at says thet they are unregistered but they have done 40000kms on the clock.

The fact that the car is unregistered does not mean you'll get the full warranty. If it's got 40,000km on it, then it must have been previously registered (probably to a car rental company). Therefore, the warranty would have started from the date of first registration (go look in the owner's manual for this date). If you're lucky, the rego date will be a few months after the manufacture date, meaning that even an '03 model TL willl still have about 6-8months of warranty left, and an '04 model will have approximately a year or more left.
What I'd do is get the car inspected (even with only 40,000km's, ex-rental cars will have had a fairly hard life), and get all repairs done under warranty. I know the NRMA (NSW equivalent of the RAC) does "warranty" checks, where they point out all the faults that can be repaired under warranty. Maybe RAC does the same?
In any event, even if the car has been neglected, a 2-3 year old car with 40,000kms will still have a lot of life left in it. It just depends on whether you want a good car, or a perfect car :) For approximately $15k, you're getting a lot of car. 3-4 year old Toyota Echos are going for not much less (I saw a 2002 model get sold for $12k), and I saw an 8 year old Camry advertised for $12k, sitting next to a TL magna for $16k. I know which one I'd choose :D

I got myself a 2004 TL AWD magna for $15000.
Edit: pics soon.
My car was an ex-demo. Warranty starts when it first registered to the dealer.
Ive got myself a 6 year warrenty, remainder of the 04 warrenty and 3 year dealer warrenty.
