Get a CD with all your favorite songs and go have a listen! Ultimately its all up to personal taste, there is plenty of speakers that sound great on the board for five minutes but there is no way you would be able to listen to them at volume for any length of time. In saying that I know the high end PG stuff has a great reputation, I have a xenon 4 ch amp and am very happy with it. So a reputable brand IMHO, havent heard the splits tho.

I can tell you their amps sound great, but not sure on spkrs, for that $$ look at brands like Focal(pers fave), Morel, Hertz, Oz Audio, Diamond. Thats a few to get you started.
i have a pair of 6.5" octane Rs.....good value for money, midbass is a bit lacking, splits a tiny tad too bright. But who can complain really. For their price they're pretty unbeatable.
phoenix gold titanium elites, xenon(discontinued) are good. they just brought out a new range of items replacing the xenon range.

Those Phoenix Gold Ti 6 Elite (http://www.phoenixgold.com/2004/titaniumelitespeakers.html)speakers have the most insane power handling (RMS) I think I have ever seen. Or am I just reading it wrong?
i would be willling to do a number of things for a pair of them

Alpine Type R splits aren't too bad for $400 on the dot

Have a chat to Marty from FHRX.
But I would recommend Morel, Hertz, Boston. They are all very popular around that price. Focals tend to be a bit over priced compared to their equivalents, though they are a very nice speaker!

Focals are no more expensive than the equivs in Morel or Hertz, with splits starting at $239.
I paid $350 for my Focal Polyglass 165V2's and they pump hard and loud.

Forget Alpine, great source units, decent amps but speakers are a let down IMHO.
Personally if you have $400 to spend go listen to some splits in that price range, no advice can beat what your own ears recommend, and save an extra $150-200 for some SD and decent install.

Greetings All.
Dont worry buddy...I havent skimped on the sound deadening...so far i have brought 2x stinger roadkill expert bulk packs...
and used a pack and a half on my boot alone :D
Just need some recommended splits for around the $400 mark...listen to ALMOST everything...but mainly R&B/hip hop, techno (drum & bass/house), etc...
I also like my splits to be bright but not the harsh sound from a metal tweeter...
Ideas?

Awesome youll really reap the benefits of having good speakers then.

I find my focals bright but not harsh(with the xover set to -3db, and can go to -6db) have you had a listen to these? Focal Polyglass 165V2's? I was in a local audio shop today and they were on special for $329 !!! RRP is like $439.

Ok then guys...what type of music do you guys listen to? What splits do you have and how do they cope??

My music is hugely varied. From classic rock(led zepplin, ac/dc, cat stevens etc), rap(2pac, snoop, ice-t, ice cube), dance/techno(90's dance tracks, infected mushrooms, rogue traders) to bands like live, creed, james blunt, skunkhour, rob zombie/white zombie, pantera.
Due to this I have different eq settings I use.
To be honest on most music it sounds great, real natural sound but can tend to be a little shrill on some metal tracks. But vocals sound great and the midbass is punchy and clear.
I recommend replacing the std plastic baffles the speakers mount to with custom 12mm MDF ones, as I have(got the idea from S_TIM_ULATE). There is a post in the audio section with pics etc for you to check out.
Have you listened to any speakers yet? What brands did you like?

Tonba;
I still think that the Hertz HSK165's are your best bet. Loads of midbass from them, not as bright (or crisp) as the focals though. Leans towards suiting R&B/Dance genres, and the get very loud. Boston's are similar, good all-rounders.
The focal 165V2's are a very very good speaker, recommended time and again by many on here - there is a reason for that. If you can find them sub-$350 then grab them before someone else does. I personally think the lack a tiny bit of midbass, if they had a bit more I would go for them every time.
And yes, Those Diamond Hex's are a step up again. You are really getting into SQ speakers by that stage. As you mentioned, too far outside you budget however.

Hey dude I got Boston Splits and they work really well. The tweeters are harsh but when mounted in the kicks they blend very well with the mids. Nice overall sound.
I listen to everything but love R&B / Dance / Hip Hop and REM :bowrofl:
Hertz splits are really really loaded with mid bass, that is probably where I will look when I upgrade, just got the girlfriend the Decei $160 6.5inch splits and they sound so much better than anything under $200 as far as mid bass. Tweeters are very bright.
