Hi,
Just about to replace my 235/45/17 tyres.
I can get Michelin Preceda's for $266, or Falken ST115's for $222.
Both these on sale.
I am after a quieter tyre, as last 235's were a little noisey.
The guys at the tyre shops recommended these two for balance of quietness/performance.
Anyone got these fitted, work in tyre trade etc, or opinions on which to go with. Most seem to think these are both great tyres, but that the Falken ST115's are the quietest performance tyre on the market???
THXXXXX
How will you be treating these tyres?

I run the ST115's, have for ages... Much quieter than the Falken FK-451 and the Toyo Proxy-4's i've had...And I prefer the dry grip of the ST-115's (awesome) over both but wet grip isn't as good...IMO...

are these for a 7" wheel ?
cos you do know that fitting a 235 to a 7" wheel is illegal !
have a go with Hankook K104's. - should be roughly $200 per corner
Ive found them to be an extremely good tyre in the dry and the wet.
a little on the loud side, but they last a hell of a long time, i've had mine for 12 months, and i punish mine daily. !

How will you be treating these tyres?
Won't be flogging them, just normal driving.
Last Kumho's I had drove me mad with the tyre noise on anything other then super smooth roads. (i know have to expect some noise with this size, but want to get as quiet as possible this time.) Anyone who has the Preceda's or ST115's comment on tyre noise/comfort?
They will be on 17x7.5 rim's (know the requirements that 235's can't be fitted to 17 x 7's)

Check out the F1 GSD-3 too they are pretty quiet. I havent been that impressed with the falkens i have had in the past, they are great when new but wear quickly and arent that good in the wet.

Thx. Yeah priced the F1 GSD-3's as well, but they were $310 a tyre or more at most places.
Preceda's and ST115's seemed cheap at $266 and $222 on sale, so sought of narrowed choice down to these two.
Most tyre places seemd to suggest the Preceda's and ST115's for best balance of performance, and noise/comfort. Apparrently the ST115's are Falkens upmarket tyre, so far superior to the rest of the range, and the Preceda's won (wheels or motors???) tyre comparo....
What the GSD-3's like noise/comfort wise. Have heard good reviews on them re wet/dry performance.

What Kumho's you got. I have had both the Ecsta 712's and the 711's. 711's rubbish with poor wet/dry handling, and wore out in 30,000km's (only a H speed rating should have know better!!), 712's are a silica tyre compund, and weren't too bad handling wise, and lasted 55,000km's. They were $195 and $155 at time........Both noisy as!!
Have been told this is because they are directional, and pattern they wear in.
Im hoping either the Preceda's or Falken ST115's will be heaps better. Most tyre places seem to think they are the quietest........and best balance of performance and noise/comfort.....

And if they're for a 7.5' rim then that rim is probably not legal or insurable. Hope he's doing his homework.

dont know if its the same in all states but atm goodyear dealers are having a 4 for the price of 3 sale, so gsd3 ftw!
but they win n e ways.
imo no point going for middle, go cheap and save for better ones later, go buy some federals (which arnt bad for bottom enders) and while ur saving the cash for the gsd3 u can thash em :p
well my theory n e ways

Done homework, and very aware of the legal/and insurance requirements.
In ACT (as in most states) you are allowed to go 1 inch wider then the largest factory wheel package fitted to your model. Since 17x7 was largest factory wheel package, you can go up to 8inch wide. My insurance company only allows 7.5's on magna's, so thats what I have gone with. Has been over pits in ACT, and ok'ed by insurance.......
Now back to topic....anyone else currently running Preceda's or ST115's who can comment??

I would recommend the Yokohama A500 Aspec-DB if you want a quiet and long-lasting tyre.
I drive very conservatively, and so haven't explored the limits of the tyres, but I am told that if you are after a really grippy tyre, these A500's aren't the best.
But they really are a quiet and smooth tyre. I have had them on my E46 BMW323i, and now run them on my KH Verada.
Completely happy with them

Just a question about this 235 going on a 7" wheel being illegal where did you get this info from cause i rang the RTA in NSW ( tech department) and they said they do not govern this its up to the tyre manafactures to say weather it can go on it or not.
i know this has being addressed many times but i just want to know where this info you guys are getting it from.
I'm planning to get maxxis 235/45/17 95H tyres to go on my TL VR-X rims.
cheers Mark

ive done 30,000km on this set, and the fronts are only just losing the edge, even with the torture i put them through.
quallity german made tyre, good enough for maybach

The size requirements for tyres on particular rims are setout in 'The Tyre & Rim Association of Australia Standards Manual'. Every tyre place should have one. It states that a 235/45/17 tyre can be mounted on a rim that is between 7.5” and 9” in width. You will find that all the manufacturers will state these same figures for acceptable rim width for that particular sized tyre.
As for rim and tyre size in the ACT: I took my TS through rego several times with 245/35/19 on 8.5” rims and all they made sure of was that the rolling diameter wasn’t changed by more than 15mm (from the std 14’s), that the track hadn’t changed by more that the allowable limit (25mm from memory, betta check that one) and that the wheels or tyres didn’t rub on anything…looks like we have it good down here…
Insurance is another story...

My wheels are 7.5", but I have noticed on a lot of manufacturer's websites, they state that 235/45/17's are fine with 7 inch rims???? I know that the The Tyre and Rim Association states that it isn't allowed, but I'm wondering who care's if the NSW Rta don't follow this advice!!!:)

I would not care about what the RTA says, I'd care a lot more about what the insurance assessor says, especially if it's a large claim.
Especially good when you read bridgestone's disclaimer
Specifications
When fitting new replacement tyres and/or wheels, ensure the tyre load and speed ratings equal or exceed the minimum allowed for that vehicle, subject to relevant State legislation and regulations. Ensure alternative tyre and wheel fitments comply with relevant State legislation and regulations.

Lol...Im usually concerned what the RTA and Police say, as well as my insurance company:)
Interesting though.....surely insurance companies would be guided by Laws and legislation as they are with most of their other policy. I mean the RTA as a government department are responsible for this legislation, so why would they not be aware of the 'supposed' guidelines that 235 tyres cannot be fitted to 7 inch wheels??? Or was that previous post incorrect?
Does anyone have a link for the Wheels and rims association....would be good to have a look at what they have to say.

I dont know if the rim and tyre association have published their book online. There is, however plenty of stuff from the RTA which references to the guide.
As for insurance companies, it's in one of those grey areas whereby if they really wanted, they could probably get their way out of paying a significant claim.
What you really need to do is ring your insurer, and not speak to the telemarketers (who could possibly be residents of New Delhi), but get them to transfer you to one of the techs or the assessors.

Have 235/40/ZR18 Falken ZIEX ZE512's. Find these have been a good handling tyre on the AWD, both dry and wet. Cost $220 for !8's so would expect the 17's to be around the $170-$180 mark. Haven't noticed tread noise on whilst driving either. And they do come int he 17's

As for the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia Standards Manual... I've been told that u need to be a member of the Assosiation and pay to get the manual so it's easiest just to go to a tyre place and have a look at theirs.

I'd love to know which insurance company besides justcars allows 7.5" wide rims on a magna.
I did a sh*tload of research about a year ago before buying new rims and tyres, It is illegal to fit 235 wide tyres to a 7" rim, The tyre and rim assosiation of australia govern this, not the RTA and definately not the tyre companies!
i'm paying stuff all for insurance with NRMA so i stuck with 17x7 to keep inline with their requirements, i could go 18...19...20" x 7 but the tyres wouldn't have the load rating required for a magna(94) and would void my insurance, if i fitted 235's to a 7" it will void your insurance.
ANYWAY
I've had 225/45/17 ST115's for about a year and they are seriously the best tyre i have ever experienced, besides $500 yoko's. unbelieveable in the wet and dry and NO road/tyre noise.
OH yeh, almost forgot.......good to see yas all again lol

dunno about road noise but the michies are hard to beat for longevity, the servo i work at sells federals that size for way under $200, they seem to last a while as long as you keep the pressure up and we've had no complaints about noise, may be worth thinking about.
