View Full Version : Temporarily lost my clutch - yes, I did find it again har har har
Coming home from work, stopped at a set of lights on a hill.
Took off normally, no hard launching or anything. Revs shoot to 4 grand, clutch is engaged, car goes pretty much nowhere. Make it up the hill, whack it into fourth, revs jump crazily from 2 to 3.5K.
Clutch is obviously slipping like buggery. Climb another hill (slowly), hear a dull thud and suddenly my clutch is back, no slipping. Verified by launching mildly then reving out each gear to 4K, not a hint of slipping.
Roll into garage, car stinks like ****, burning clutch smell all over the damn place. I not long ago had the clutch replaced. I wonder if this is linked to my mysterious font left 'bang'?
Will take it out for another drive when it cools down.
What in the hell can cause a clutch to go and then come back like that. ****, I hope it ain't fried because that means MAJOR trouble for me.
Anyone that lives around the Chapel Hill area (Brisbane) can give me some help?
EDIT
Oh yeah, seemed the thunk came after I disengaged then re-engaged the clutch fully while rollling uphill. Possibly the clutch got stuck? Dunno.
Well, I just took it out for a little drive, did a few hillstarts and ripped a fat burnout in the garage. Seems fine *koff koff*
Weird. Still worth keeping an eye on methinks

i've heard of this kinda thing before but it was a long time ago so i can't remember what caused it, i guess it could be caused by the slave cylinder sticking or something getting caught in between the flywheel and pressure plate, who knows? anyway let's hope it don't happen again hey?

had the same problem..but it seems to have vanished,,,
i would say you could have probably had a little oil drop onto the clutch plate.. which will cause it to slip and settle each time u shift..
you may have a leak somewhere...
i had a small issue of wiring to the ECU like.. burning all the way down.. that had similar signs as yours.. but it didnt smell .. the inconsistency however often occurance baffeled me and my mechanic for a while.. as it was random.. but then slowly got worse and worse.

oil on the clutch will make it shudder, not slip, unless you've got a ****load of oil on it

hmm i would think it would slip not shudder... a clutch usually shudder's when it's not lined up properly.. not when it has oil on it..(i could be wrong)
also a clutch will slip when you overheat it..

Check your clutch slave/master cylinder. When i got my TN 2 years ago,my clutch went on me ,on the way to work.It slipped all the way home, every time I changed gear:rant:
New clutch put in from last owner before I got it.
I from north side of brisbane.
Hmm, I had a thought and checked the fluid level for the clutch, perhaps something in the clutch hydraulics didn't allow the clutch to properly disengage, and when I disengaged and reengaged it fixed whatever was wrong? Bah, air bubbles or what not?
No idea on that one.
Anyway, there's no oil leaks anywhere as the garage concrete slab shows no signs of staining or freshly dropped oil. Unless there's an internal leak? Is that possible somewhere?
Will be driving to work tomorrow, so if it stinks like poo when I get there then I'll know for sure something is up. Anyone recommend a good mechanic in Bris, or do we have a sponsor up this way?

You shouldnt be hurting those nice tyres.. lol

Well, I did need a good way to test the clutch so ...
They're still going strong btw, had to adjust the pressure a little at first but now they're fine.
Amazing what the new profile does for grip in the dry! Wet is still ****house though. But that's to be expected really.
My car is so torque-y it has no trouble spinning the 17"s. That surprised me as I though that there'd be a bit of a drop in power because of the increased circumfrence.
Gotta love that 2nd gen pull.
