a 8.5" rim can fit in easily.. it all depends on the offset of the rims mate

Well, it's a TH Exec right? The available wheels would have been 15 x 6's yeah, possible 16 x 6's or 6'5's if you're lucky? Who is the car insured with? You'll have a hard time trying to convince them that an 8 inch wide rim is okay to have. Local road authorities used to limit increases to an inch wider and insurers typically do too. So, you're limited to 7 inch wide rims.

the rims are 17x7 and 17x8 so im thinking the 8inch wides on the rear will this stuff the handleing up wont it right yer

 like i said... it depends on the offset of the rim. and yes, it is most likely illegal.

Why on earth would you want larger rear tyres? ifs a fwd.. rofl...

You also then dont have the option to rotate all 4 wheels to make them last longer..

People get larger rears to keep traction.. in rwd applications...

i know in VIC larger than 1 inch off stock is unroadworthy.
if u stack the car, u may run into insurance issues. hence i went to 17x7's

But the offset is what will affect whether u get fouling of the guards etc like choonga said.

This is from a May 2003 VICROADS PDF, so it may or may not be current.

The width of any replacement rim must not be

-more than 25mm (1") greater than the widest wheel specified by the manufacturer for that model or vehicle series.

So, this means that

A--if a TH Exec came out with 6", you can go to 7". (same model)

B--if a TH Sports came out with 7" wide wheels, you could go to 8". (same vehicle series)

C--if a TJ Ralliart came out with 7.5", you could go to 8.5". (same vehicle series?) :doubt:

What's anyone's interpretation of this?

BTW, I've got 17 x 8" on my TH Exec., and the front tyres stick out about 5mm past the guard :shhhh: :shifty: . Don't think the rims have the right offset, as mentioned before. "8J x 17 H2" is stamped on the inside of the rim, if this helps.

It's definitely illegal to have your tyres protruding past the edge of the guard....

Cheers,
Martin.

Bjay,

if you only want 17" rims then put the 7" wide ones on ALL FOUR corners. Use the standard offset (36 I think - search my earlier posts).

Also go for 225/50-17 tyres with the correct load rating (check your dad's tyre placard). 235/45 are too wide for 7" rims and 8" rims are too wide in some states for Magna's.

8" are fine in QLD but not NSW. I don't know about SA but you can be fairly sure that 7" are OK.

Both NSW and QLD DO NOT allow different width wheels on the same car unless it is RWD only. I imagine SA would be the same.

The unusual wheel/tyre size combo does mean that the whole package is more expensive, especially when you throw in the load rating which narrows the choice of tyre right down. If you want some info on which tyres to go for then have a look at the current Wheels mag which has a tyre comparo in it.

standard offset for ALL 3rd gen rims, steel or alloy, 15", 16" 17", whatever width, is +46.

I have 17x8 with 235 on, and it fits perfect, I think it is the offset you have to look at.

That's awesome!
I thought it was just what the tyre placard said, but if its for series, SWEET!
Whatever ford XR6 rims offset is, it's PERFECT for the magna with 8 inch wide rims, as my rims sit JUST inside the guards, and i have ZERO problems with rubbing :).
