:D Hey guys!
Just a quick question, which fuel would be best to use for the Verada?

Regular unleaded, Premium unleaded or High octane?
Is it worth using high octane? Does it even do much? I use high octane in the supra but is it worth it in the verada?

Thanks guys! :)

anything with High Octane but i wouldn't recomend shell optimax there was an issue with it awhile back and everytime I go to a mechanics about the way my cars idle they always ask if I have been using the shell optimax.

Please tell some more for the benefit of us, what probs were you experiencing with idling that could be attributed to using shell optimax?

Anyone else have comments/experiences on good/problematic fuel that you've use?

Wasn't me personally I only used it twice when it first came out and instead used the other's as there closer to were I live.

But I did read an artical a year or two ago about Shell being caught out not producing the optimac like they said they were and that customers were experincing problems with there cars etc. Plus like I said before it's funny how mechanics around were i live seem to ask if you have been filling up on optimax ?

All my cars need was a tune up and one car need new injectors.

So optimax, no go?
Damn thats a shock i thought optimax was one of the top high octane fuels.

At the moment I use caltex vortex 98.
Seems to be doing well for me and it does last longer in the tank i must admit and its quite noticeable.

Optimax is crossed off the list then :disgusted

What are the main things you guys notice between using regular and high octane?

/me shoots dimi108 for opening yet another FUEL thread, which we have about 100+ of.

please use the SEARCH button above, click Advanced Search on the link and use Ctrl to select Tech Torque & 2nd Gen , also 3rd Gen if interested.

I use Mobil Premium all the time, haven't had a problem. BP Ultimate also is good & never had an issue with Optimax ever!

However, @ 10cents more (almost a $1.50 in melb) I would consider if it is wise for you to waste money on it.

You will find the search will bring up many discussions.

just a little suggestion if your changing fuel do it when prices ease a little, at the moment they @$1.309 and if your goanna change fuel during high price, it will cost a fortune, I have used vortex once before and not worth it, all it does is a few extra kws, ever since the petrol price skyrocket I’ve filled up less and I’ll be driving less as possible

i just filled up 2day, only half a tank, which is lite for me because i always fill up full tank, costed me 45$ insead of $62 - 4c safeway discount
ps - fill up 2day if can amc members , otherwise u'll be swearing all the way bank:rant: tommroow, or drive less

Thanks

The 2nd Gen motors are fitted with knock sensors, which will alter timing to suit the octane rating of the fuel. I use BP 6000 in my Verada, and the difference is noticable. Lowered consumption, smoother idle, slightly cooler running.

At the end of the day, it's really up to you. BP 8000 is overkill for anything that's not running forced induction, but I'd recommend 6000/96RON for the Verada.

i use ultimate 98 octane and only it, the other 97-98 octanes are good too but i have experienced bad batches of them.

With 91; lumpy idle and generally rougher sounding.
With 98; smooth as a boat sounds as smooth as any new car.

With the 10:1 comp ratio i also think it's wise.

Thanks guys! :)

I ONLY run it on at least 95 octane (premium), but usually try to get the BP ultimate (98) as I have observed very clear differences in the performance and driveability at high rpm and long highway runs when compared with lower grade premium 95 or normal unleaded.

I have also experienced problems with optimax. and when I had them ultrasonic cleaned, the dude said it was was a major contributor to my clogged injectors.

When running on normal unleaded on the same trip to and from work, I average 410 from 55 litres (I work almost 1000Km from home but there are no flights there)

when running on 95 octane I get 500km from 55 litres,

and
when running on the 98 octane I get 580-640Km from 51 litres.

So I personally see it as being worth it to pay the extra 10 or so cents per litre for the really good stuff, especially when you need that bit extra "getup and GO" to pass an outback Aussie roadtrain.

I usually pay around 120.9/130.9 /litre for standard unleaded, so to me, I see it as being worth the extra $5-$6 extra per tankfull to use premium or 98.

Also, the fuel consumption on my TS had dropped to around 420-500Km mark (using premium and or ultimate) until I had the injectors cleaned last month, Straight after the clean it was back up to 680KM on the first tankfull of 98 ultimate.

was recently given a heap of shell/coles vouchers for 4c/ltr off. i must say the verada runs s/h on normal shell 91oct however runs alittle better on 95 ron. but i am not happy with the shell fuel car just doesnt run rite. have now started to try the saff fuels with 10% cor can't think of the name and must say get better mpg and a little better pick up. will keep trying that for a while.

Well some of us cant do that! I travel almost 1000Km to and from work (I travel to work, stay there for 10 days, then drive home almost 1000km again) and I have NO choice but to "consume" the quantity of fuel I do.

Also in regard to the higher octane fuels:
I notice a difference of about 90Km from standard to 95 premium, and between 80 and 140 extra on the 98octane from BP (an extra 170 to 230Km from standard unleaded).

what about if you used octane booster WITH the 98 RON

Ive now inspired myself to test this out.

So with the next tank of fuel - $70 and $20 on some good octane booster.....my car should FLY!!!

Nothing wrong with Mobil 8000

I found it interesting on a current affair the other night, the Americans are paying $1.03 and we are paying $1.44, because they are using more fuel there, it affects us.

our gov taxes 50% in tax state&federal there gov taxes %19.88

I've been using premium last two weeks. Noticeable difference, lasts longer, bit more pick up, and the car tends to run smoother aswell.

My car is a 93' TR (4cyl) if that helps.

In the MR2 i always use the Caltex premium or Mobil Premium due to the s/c, but dont notice any fuel efficiency benefits from it as the motor lives at 7500-8000rpm and most of the time a WOT, but in the verada we have just started using the E10 fuel from United, and it makes a noticeable difference, its slightly cheaper, runs much smoother and the tank lasts alot longer, much longer than using premium

I have found that it takes about 2-3 FULL TANKS to get the effect of the difference from the different grades of pump fuel (92,95,98) so Im guessing that it would also take a couple of tanks to get the benefit from octane in a can.

dimi108
30-04-2006, 08:44 AM
Yeah it would if you tend to mix the fuel.
So if your going to fill up with high octane or PULP, stick to that and don't downgrade to unleaded or it'll take longer to see the difference.

What is this BP6000 and BP8000? Ive never heard of them....

Are they related only to the southern states and not here in QLD?

Well so far figures on premium are equating to about 10L/100Km mixed Driving.....Which isn't to bad for a 13 year old car i guess.

Im gonna run premium from now on.....for an extra $5 i have peace of mind.....considering we have had so many bad run-ins with regular.....so ill stick to the good s**t:)
