dont ask how i found this out.

but my handbrake only locks the drivers side rear wheel... could there be a reason for this?

maybe this could be why the car doesnt stay still on steep slopes, lol.

i cant get my car looked at by mitsu untill late next week if im lucky:nuts:

Well first of all, for the handbrake to operate correctly its always advisable to put your foot on the brake first, unless you have a transmission brake that few cars have (Nissan Patrol is one example). Its true that the brake should be ok without it, but that way the brakes are already held in position and you just pulling the handbrake to hold it there, instead of moving it there with the handbrake lever. Hopefully its just an adjustment issue, although it could be that the pistons have been scored in the brake calipers due to the presence of water in the brake fluid (brake fluid is hygroscopic - absorbs water) and should be replaced every year. If you're using good Super Dot 4 fluid like Nulon which is yellow, you can change it every two years as its partially water absorbant resistive and anti-corrosive, and costs like a dollar more!

But yeah, foot on the brake first especially on slops should at least help you with the rolling issue. This should be done with the engine running, if the engine is off it will still help but the power assisted brakes will be inoperative and you'll have to put your foot on the brake harder.

You need to re-adjust the handbrake at the rear hubs. There are a couple threads on this forum outlining the correct procedure.

But basically you need to remove the rear wheels. Once this is done you will notice a small rubber grommet on the face of the hub (normally covered by the wheel).

Removing this grommet will reveal a small toothed wheel (like a cog). You need to turn this wheel up or down (with the hand brake down) using a flat head screw driver.

I forgot the direction needed to tighten the shoe inside the drum, but you can check by turning the hub with your hand. Keep doing this till you can feel the hub getting harder to turn (with handbrake lever down), then you need to loosen it a bit (so the brakes don't drag).

Do this to both sides (for even brake force), once you get the right tension at both sides, replace the rubber grommets and wheels (obviously lol ), then lightly tighten the hand brake cables from within the cabin (access can be gained by taking the centre console tub out(under the arm rest cover)).

Go for a test drive to make sure you aren't dragging the brakes and adjust as needed.

Happy handbraking (make sure you read the other threads first as it is explained in greater detail) :D

Your handbrake should hold the car when you pull it up 3 to 5 clicks, they stretch like crazy after they come from the factory, mine was 8 maybe even 9 when I got the car and it wouldn't hold on certain hills/driveways.

oh ok, so its not a major problem it only locks one wheel, its just a matter of adjusting that one side. cool, thanks fellas :D
