check if the rc cables from the head unit to the amp are next to the power cable for the amplifier this is generally the cause

Also check for a bad earth connection.

You can get an inline filter for your RCA's. This worked for my dad.
They're about $20-$30 from Jb / strathfield.

What RCA cables are you using?
I upgraded from sh!tty bunnings ones to Stingers and it made a sh!tload of difference. Then with my new car i noticed the sound came back, but not as bad. Turned out to be the ground for the amps wasn't grounded properly. Theres been heaps of threads on this, do a search if you dont find the answer in this thread.

Yep, if you know where the wires run, set aside a few good hours, take everything nessassry apart, and just double check your grounds are clean (sand back paint to bare metal) and also keep the power wire to the amp AS FAR AWAY as possible to the RCA's if possible, down the opposite side of the car.

You should be right

A lot of wiring is not required in a car as the negative battery terminal runs through the cars chassis (negatively ground). There were some postively ground cars years ago but that idea seems pretty stupid...

Anyway the best way to ground your amp and head unit is to run an independent wire back to the negative terminal on the battery (ensure its the negative). You can do this with a head unit only as well. The best way to do it is to earth it to the car like normal, but have another wire running from there to the negative terminal on the battery. That way if the wire is removed from the battery etc. you still have a ground. As electricity will always select the easiest path of travel the wire would be used normally. If you are running amps you can splice in the earth wires to one main earth wire.

Now a lot of people would say not to do that, and it may even say that in the installation manuals. The reason for this is if the wire is broken or removed and thats the only ground you got you're in trouble. You HAVE to ground it and have the ground wire going from that grounding point to the NEGATIVE terminal on the battery :D

This has been reported to give better sounding audio (I looked up ground wires for cars a while back), mainly because the earthing to the car body can suck!

My science teacher in year 11 said that cars that were oppositely charged had better protection against rust. No idea if this is true though, but i think the dangers of attracting lightning etc. outweighed the benefit
