Hey all;
in haynes it suggests api gl 4 75-85w oil for the trans oil but i dont know if thats the current recommendation as in supercheap it suggests castrol *MX-M or similar but they don't stock that... anyone got any ideas... for a manual ts v6.
What i really want to know is am i meant to add all the oil using a syringe? and is so where do i get a big syringe and bit of hose to lead up to the filler hole??.
Thanks for any help;
im trying magnatec too i've been using 20-50W hpr30 but i'll see if the magnatec synth blend performs better or worse... similar price but thinner oil.
Peace out.
It is quite confusing IMHO. Neither factory owner manual or Haynes clearly states what oil need to be used. I filled it with Castrol EPX80W90. Actually Castrol recommends VMX-M75W85 for Mitsibishi. I took EPX because I have another car (Landcruiser) and really sick to have lots of different semi-empty containers in my garage. Besides I have some kind of paranoia for very thin oil – at the end of the end we are living in Australia, not Canada :-). Anyway it is straight forward operation. Just give yourself favor and get some kind of manually operated oil pump ($20 or even less) save lots of frustration.
Cheers

The VMX oils were originally formulated for Mitsu manual boxes - I first used it on a 5 speed sigma box and it fixed cold shift baulking (stick wont go into gear) , synchros not releasing (gears grinding on shift), and smoother warm shifts. Wouldn't use anything else now. .

yeah in the auto's you can fill it with a funnel through the trans dipstick but manuals (2nd gen don't know 3rd gen) there's a filler hole on the side of the tranny.
I'd like to get a manually operated oil pump but i dont think supercheap sell them; hope repco do as auto bahn and others are miles out.

heres some pics; there seems to be filler hole on top and i found a pump thingy at supercheap for 12$ just checking whats the drain plug etc.... i think i rounded the check hole as ****wit mechanic has obviously used a rattle gun... ****ing moron. The magnatec seems to work very well.... havent driven it yet just reved it via t/b. Tappets are quieter. yay
Can people just confirm the plugs;
thanks

the first pic with the elec connection looks like the speedo drive but i could be wrong there.if it is the speedo u can fill it from there untill the tranny oil dribbles out the level check bolt hole. and to fill it easyer just go to bunnings and grab a metre of clear 1cm tube and force one end over the funnel and the other end in the speedo drive hole. will take a little time but ull get it.

i have something to fill it with. Itll work too but i jst need to make sure i have the plugs right i'm pretty sure that has something to do with the speedo but it looks like the plug to the right is to fill it.
What i still don't know is whether or not to do it anyway as i cant get the level check bolt out and i'll round it further if i try. So do i dump te fluid and put the approximate right amount in??

i would suggest not to estimate it cos u dont want to have too much or not enough in there. why dont u go to the wreckers and get a replacement bolt they wont charge u much.
( i snapped a bolt off half way on my auto tranny and got another bolt from the wreckers and they told me to just take it seeing as it was only one bolt). then just get sum multi grips and clamp it on and undo the bolt then swap the stripped bolt for the replacement one u got from the wreckers. the way to tell u have the right level is to fill it till it dribbles out the level check hole. now if u still fail in getting the bolt out just do what i did for the bolt i snapped of im my tranny, which was buying a easy-out drill bit (extractor) which is a revese thread bit. m4 will be the size u want cause its a small bolt. then centre punch the bolt and take a small but sharp drill bit and drill the centre out (not all the way through) but take ur time and make sure it's centred then use the easy-out to take the bolt out. the way it works is cause the threads reversed when u turn it anti-clock wise it bites into the bolt making it easy to get out.good luck:D

Would that oil help with my TN box with worn 3 gear synchros?

ok, to dump the oil, undo the 24mm plug at the botton of the box, and to refill, undo the filler plug, the 17mm plug, on the side. if the plug is rounded a bit, use a single hex socket and breaker bar to undo, that will grip much better than a double hex socket! other than that, using a cold chisel and hammer and give it some sharp strikes, on the edge, going anti-clockwise of course. buy a new plug, and all should be ok!
p.s: fill the box, till the oil just runs out of it, that way u know its full.. oh, and try and have the car fairly level!
good luck
