View Full Version : Maximum tyre width on 9 inch rim

Just wondering if 275/40/17 tyres would fit on a 9 inch rim? Different tyre shops have told me yes and no. And would this tyre fit on the front end of a TJ Sports at stocko hight. The rim is fairly dished and has more offset than the standard mags. The rims were off a 200sx. I'm in search of traction, sick of being beaten of the line by RWDs

We will never be able to get as much traction off the line as a RWD counterpart. A LSD should go a long way to evening it out but.

Im too cheap for an lsd.
and as a side note, my magna is a ton quicker than my bros sr20det 180sx off the line. his is auto though

Well other cheaper suggestions are:
Antilift kit, Strut brace, lower the car, stiffer Shocks, grippier rubber, go easy off the line then boot it, etc.

275 probly wont fit, but it depends on ur offset. but if it does fit within the guards, you will have to trim some of the inside plastic guard on the front wheel arches, as it will wear away at it when you turn.

If it wears it away, there is no point triming it. Im going to trial fit the 9 inch rim this afternoon, once i recover from my boozy lunch. it is tyre less atm but should give me some indication of whether it will fit or not. Might try for some pictures too.
I would love an LSD, and am considering a lift kit. I read once on Autospeed.com that the LSD in the Ralliart was from an FTO. Is this correct, and if so, what would be required to mod an FTO diff to fit in a magna.

u say ur cheap and dont wanna spend the extra money for an LSD ... yet u getting major dished out rims and 275 tread ... hmmmm :S

and correct me if im wrong doesnt more traction also slow u down?
for example it will help u get off the line quicker due to extra traction ... but will also slow u down on top end due to TRACTION lol ..
kinda like a BMX racer has wide tyres, yet a street bike has very skinny tyres to reduce traction..
just thought id throw it isnto the mix

Got the rims from a mate for a good price, and am working on getting the tyres cheap. and as for top speed. yes they will slow you down but the I havent been near the top end speed of my car so no probs there.
And BMX race bikes run skinny tyres too. mountain bikes run fat tyres for down hill/freestyle
Has anyone fitted an aftermarket LSD? How much do they cost?

Too late, already shreaded at the front. After the clutch was changed the inner guard wasnt put back in place properly. At high speed I think it blew back onto the tyre. bye bye inner guard.

A picture of the rim in question. Pretty PHAT. Inside clearance my be an issue too. Need pumped guard.
Your stock guards will look awfully goofy if you manage to roll them out enough to accomodate those rims. Nice hail damage you have there too :shock:

wtf are you doing? a 9" rim doesnt mean you are gona get a faster car because you can launch better. Using a wider rim = more weight. and that just means more rolling resistance. which means more loss of power. You'll be suprised what a few kg on each wheel does to quater mile times.
to top it off the rim doesnt even fit. the rims sticking out by an inch. Unless you're trying to go for the f1 car look it doesnt work.
btw. before fitting your rims please fix the hail damage. your car is reminiscent of a golf ball.
i can see it now. Drummond golf & Mitsubishi merge to create a new f1 team for season 2007

i ride BMX (hence my user name), and as for the tire issue here...
slicker/skinnier/more pressure = less rolling resistance (and less grip, the tire can't form to the surface as well) = less effort, roll faster/further
knobbier/fatter/less pressure = more rolling resistance (and more grip, because the tire can form to the surface it's rolling on) = more effort, roll slower/not as far.
i run a street tire on the back and a dirt tire on the front, with higher pressure in the front. 60-70psi front / 100-110psi rear (not that this has anything to do with cars)
anyway, to do with cars now. would you advise for or against running more pressure than what's recommended on your tire placard(sp?)

More pressure - tyre placards are usually recommending something that will give the same NVH as what the car was tested at - ie. at a higher pressure, it will be noiser, and a firmer ride, but you will find that you use less fuel to boot as well.

HAHAHAHA... funny ****. But i agree 100% there... Rim is way to wide and so defectable and bloody obvious too. Rolling out the guards will look crap, specially if it needs to be rolled that much.

i went from 225s to 245s(witch are about perfect i reckon) 1/4 mile time diff was....14.675 to 14.676:D so not sure it really makes any diff

245/35/20`s only just fit within the guards.. 275 wont.. but he did say stock height, not 4inch off the ground..:P

Oi.... leave us hail damaged magnas alone mate.... I reckon mine is about the same, and it's bloody expensive to fix. I'm not touching mine for a little while longer. I am paying off what remains on my loan, THEN fixing it.
I will agree that it looks disgusting however. I drive one like that every day. It is kinda embarrasing, along with the clear coat coming off on the other bits.

I reckon 90% of people dont notice. Even people who have been in the car havent noticed, both guys & girls
