Ok i've just about had it. For about the last 6 weeks i have noticed a shocking decrease in fuel economy. Now its go to the point where half a tank reads 260km's when it used to read 400. Thats a fair difference!
What the hell is going on? Any idea's? :?
I've used fuel treatment and that didn't help. I know my cam belt needs to be changed but that wouldn't be affecting it would it?
Any idea's people??!!?? Its keeping me poor!

what have you changed since the fuel has started running through teh system quicker??
have you put the fuel cap back on?? j/ks
i am getting about 380km to half a tank in my 3.5L so you should definitely be getting more then me - and that is with my drving style!!
hmm, i dunno!!

hmmm, couple of things:
if gear box is on its way out - holding in gear longer - higher revs - more fuel
engine is on its way out - fuel burn not complete
MAS reading wrong - thinking more air then what there is - asking for more feul to compensate
fuel tank has a hole in it
ECU is off - saying it needs more fuel - could do with MAS
I dunno - i am just thinking this could effect it!!
u r still running BP Ultimate?? the consumptions u are saying u r getting now i used to get on ULP - but BP Ultimate - much better consumption!! maybe it could be a bad batch of fuel - has it happened with more than one tank of fuel??

Hmmm lets go through the checklist
* do you have one of those silly pod filters ?
* what size are those nice new rims ? 17 or bigger ? ifso then the gearing of your car is different and will effect fuel economy
*any other mods to your engine or exhaust ?
*any added weight ? Ie. Fully sick stereo or 3 sexy chicks in the back seat ?
theres a few ideas 8)

I am really not sure how accurate this information is, but someone else might be able to clear it up...
I have heard (fifth, sixth..... tenth hand...) that running your car on performance fuels such as BP ultimate and Shell Optimax, is actually bad for your car, if you use it all the time... (unless your car is WRX or such) Something to do with them burning at a higher temperature and having cleaning agents in them that causes all the crap building up in the engine (oil deposits etc) to burn off, cleaning out the engine too well causing more wear.... (not real sure that will make any sence, barely makes sence to me, how can your engine be too clean?, maybe someone else can explain that a little clearer???)
Don't know about others, but, I use PULP and only use fuels such as those above if I am going out for a journey.... 2 hour straight trip or more.
Not even sure that directly relates to your problem Blake, but might help someone.
Any fuel experts among us??

Steve , using high octain fuels all the time does no damage to your car and it doesnt burn at a higher tempreture. because its higher octain it actually its rated to retarded against burning hence the use in high performance cars to prevent detonation, that's why i always use it in my sprinter because i have the timing advanced till nearly pinging so if i dont use a fuel that retards against combustion more so then regular low octain my engine would be stuffed in no time.

I had all of these mods except the rims well before i had this problem... and i was still get 400 at half a tank. Now its really started to drop off. I am thinking my pod might be really dirty and while trialing my ram airbox (which actually lost power) i am thinking maybe dirt / dust got right into the pod and clogged up the cotten quite bad which is restricting airflow...
Im going to get some cleaning solution in the next few days and give my pod a clean and see how i go.
any other idea's what can be causing the problem.
I allways use Premium. I have only used RULP once in the time of owning my car.

Blakie,
When was the last time u serviced the car? Whats the mileage now?... What I can suggest is get the injectors cleaned out by the pro.. but before you do that, dump a bottle of injector cleaner in the fuel tank and see how it goes... From what I read, the injectors might be clogged with residue build up... but it's just a sugggestion...
Hope it goes well...

I put two bottle of spitfire in the tank and no improvement.
Its fairly close to a service and its done 114km's.
I will have to take it to a mechanic to get it check out. I just don't want them to do stuff and say well that didn't work, we'll try thing, oh what we just did is gonna cost you $400 by the way.

400 km on half a tank !!!!! i wish i could get near there
i am lucky to get 450 km out of a full tank of optimax
using normal ULP i get no more than 400km on a full tank of petrol
how do i check if my air mass sensor is working right or not??

In my VRX im pushing to get 450 - 500km's out of a tank. I use Optimax only.. I tried BP Ultimate and found that didnt give me as good travel distance
If your MAS isnt working properly youll feel a degradation in high end performance, aswell as idling it will gurgle and splutter..

i have a feeling my fuel gauge could be out - cos i am getting super excellent fuel consumption compared to the rest of u guys - but a L - Km rating of my fuel is about:
9.5L to the 100 kays - not going on the trip computer - but going on odometer and fuel pump!!
which isnt too bad for city driving - especially with my lead foot!!

I think its off the dealerships, it might cost more but at least they know these vehicles and could cost me less in the long run.
Fingers crossed. Im still stumped. It could be a faulty MAS sensor however at idel its fine, not lump idle but the car has lost performance...

I have just come back from last weekends trip and got over 800 k's out of my tank. About an avg of 7.9L/100k.I had got 720 k's before, but have just cleaned my k&n pod (did not over oil it this time) and put in a set of Iridium plugs and Magnecor leads. I do realize that I would not get the same consumption around town. I use ULP with the odd PULP on the my cars birthday lol

When I had my te I was told that I should get the injectors cleaned every 15-20,000 as they get clogged quite easily. My mate (working at mitsu at the time) said this was even more noticable on the 4cyl cars.
I have had my injectors cleaned before and did notice an increase in fuel economy at the time.
For about $100 at mitsu it may be worth a try. They also warrant your injectors for 15,000 kms or something after having them cleaned.
Otherwise I would definently be having a look at ur pod/ cai setup

But wouldn't think make the car use less fuel is the injectors were clogged?

Nahh its something about not spraying in properly so it uses more fuel to compensate. Im not sure but it made a difference when I did it :)

How much did it set you back?

was about $100 - $110 from memory. I have had it done to both my te (when I had it) and my tf which is my current car. Have actually been thinking about getting it done again.

Well I've done the math on my usage over the last two weeks working of bowser and distance travelled.
I'm getting 9L/100K's on Mobile PULP with a 3L auto. I'm guessing the tanks on a 98 TF is around 55L.
That isn't to bad. I find that I need to fill up a day over a week. So Monday week 1 and Tues week 2 etc.
