TO pull the tranny out of a 1st gen is it better to leave the engine in and drop it from below or to get the whole lot out with an engine crane and work from there.

well i guess it all depends on what tools u have. for example if u had a hoist id drop it down.
if u only had a block and tackle or engine crane id lift it out. if ur dropping it u need to remove the front cross member but if u lift it i just have to man handle it out. me personly id lift it and id take the engine out at the same time that way u can give it a good look over and a good degrease and clean.also things like ur engine mounts can be checked easy with it out and while its all out u can give the engine bay a good clean and make sure there no rust hiding anywhere. but it all depends on how handy u are , what tools u have and 3 or 4 mate make light work.

Ive taken 2 out and they come out the bottom real easy.

Just put a trolley jack under it, undo it all and it moves across a bit and down she goes.

If ya gunna work on the trannie give Magna Buff a yell hes done plenty of em.:D

As said, you could do it either way. After doing both ways, I'd prefer to get the gearbox out with the engine using a crane. It just didn't feel safe at all dropping the tranny from below using a bare hydraulic jack, and that was with three of us, two on the bottom making sure the tranny was stable on the jack, and one controlling the jack.

Would be good to build some sort of platform that fits on top of the jack that can secure the tranny, that way you wouldn't need anyone on the floor making sure its stable.

well i was only suggesting taking both out to give a clean up and to make sure there no hidden problems.
i figured he might as well if the trannys got to come out cant hurt too clean it up a little.
i apologise for being defensive , jumped the gun a little. all u want to do is help ppl and i should know better. so sorry ill keep it on topic.

I am thinking that i will pull the whole engine out as there are a few seals that need replacing on the engine. If i can save up the cash i'll pull it out and do a rebuild on the engine (all the gaskets, valve stem seals etc.) at the same time. Thanks for all your help. If you havn't guessed already i am trying to ressurrect my old TP :P
