I am going to attempt a head deck install on my mates GSR. Cuppla quick questions.
I have 4 speakers already installed, just need to wire the deck.

What sort of wires stick out the back of a deck. Are they bared on the ends, terminated with some sort of connector, or should I just crimp new connectors allround?

How many wires are there usually. (Sort of like asking how long is a piece of string), taking into account I need 8 wires to the (4) speakers plus power plus earth?

I can use a soldering iron if need be. I have connectors and a crimper and heatshrink tubing. I have done a little auto electrical work before (basic).

How difficult is the job? About how long should it take if I do it carefully?

Will it void his warranty if I do the install? (He can't afford the $120 for a deck install)

Getting the old radio and cassette player (WTF is a cassette player?:bowrofl:) out is easy but it will leave an ugly gap. Can I buy blank panels to fill the hole anywhere? (like the ones you see on computers)

There should be a plug that plugs into the back of the headunit. You will need to unplug this and then cut the plug off of the wires (ONE WIRE AT A TIME!!! Cant stress this enough!).
Make sure you leave a little bit of room for oyu and the plug (in case you want to revert back).
Depending on HU you're looking at this basic setup of wiring:
8 speaker leads
1 constant 12v
1 acc. 12v
1 power antenna
1 ground

Basically make sure you know which wires are which from the old deck, and match them up with the new deck, stripping the rubber, soldering and then heatshrinking (which you seem to know :)).

It's not a difficult job doing the wires, it's usually getting the old HU out thats the hardest part i find (if you've never done an install on that particular vehicle, they're all different).

You will not void warranty unless you damage the HU because of a dodgy install. Eg. connecting the power and ground wires around the wrong way could blow it up. Basically any damage caused by you and not as a result as a poor quality item, will not be covered.

For the gap, go to autobarn, you can buy little container thingys that are pretty generic that just slot into the gaps.

Thanks M4DDOG, that's exactly what I was after. I would imagine that wiring diagrams are easy enough to follow. It would just freak me out if the HU had like 100 wires stickin out the back.
Spot on. I thinks I'll have a go at it.

Sorry forgot one more wire which will be the remote wire (on your new one, doubt the old one would have it). This is for external amps. Make sure any wires on the new HU are not exposed, and same with the old Hu's leftover wires. Last thing you need is for it to short out the electricals in the car ;).

GSR lancer or GSR galant?

The car is a GSR lancer. 1992 model I think.

Tuner is a Kenwood KDCMP433 200W mp3/cd tuner. Speakers are Sony 6" 2 way XSGF1621. May not be the flashest unit or best speakers but it was his choice and the price was right.
I don't think 6x9's was an option, because they don't fit. It has 6" 3 ways in the back but they just make a farting noise when you turn the sound up.

The silly twit spent all his money on the car and didn't leave enough for a decent sound system + sub. Anyway, it wouldn't be able to compete with the fart box cannon on this thing. I have to pop my ears every 5 mins. (One lukey coming up.)

The wiring is pretty simple, the only wire you need from the current plug is the switched 12v. You can run the constant directly from the battery, which would be a good idea seeing the original wire wasn't designed to pull as much power as a 200W head unit. Don't use what is seemingly the ground wire either, as this may stop your tail lights working (hehe been there). Either ground to the car body, or ground to the car body and run an additional wire to the negative terminal in the battery (clearly label this wire at the battery so you don't accidentally connect it back up to the positive terminal!)

Its a Kenwood Deck.. My Advice is to get it Professionally installed, Within 12 months it is Highly likely he is going to need the warranty from the store..

lol as much as i hate kenwood speakers, kenwood HU's have never bothered me. Have known of a couple that have lasted 4+ years and are still going.
