i have a 97 ke verada and when i use the cruise control it will not stop me from going over the speed set if i am going down a hill.
Example: i was going down a street wich is 70 k's with lots of hills. i set it to 70 and it has no probs accelerating to 70 but and as i go down the hill i end up hiting 100.
does anyone have any suggestions on why
thanx

Because they are steep hills. Cruise control can not apply the brakes, it can only govern the speed by the engine. If the car starts rolling faster than the set speed, the only thing the cruise can do is decelerate, and perhaps kick back a gear in an auto. No cruise control will keep you at 70 down a steep hill.

Mercedes and BMW have a couple on their top models that can - auto brake, something to look forward to on our cars in 5-10 years time.

For what I have now, I usually find the gearing of the five speed auto fairly good for cruise, when it goes down the sort of hills you'd find on a highway, 5th is in such a ratio that it tends to gear brake enough that speed wont really climb more than 10km/h

yeh i get this as well. The engine drops revs as much as it can. The best thing you can probably do is force it to downshift - not sure if this will disengage the cruise though.

The after-market cruise control on my old camry was pretty good at maintaining speed (had to gun it going up hills though ) but I didn't really ever use it unless travelling over 80km/h.

Hubby's cruise on the VL calais won't kick in unless it's in 5th gear (over 75km/h) but it does increase unreasonably going down hills.

I dont get that problem in my TE, do ask for more advise. Mine sticks at the speed that I set. When rolling down it will decrease and auto shift down a gear to set at constant pace. At max it accelerate 5 kms faster but will slow down inventually to the set speed. Same as going up hills, it will slow down a little before the cruise control push it a bit to the mark speed. My Cruise control is a stock one. Have used the TL's one before and it was even better at staying constant. But maybe yours happened in a very very steep slope? have you tried other slopes as well?

20kmh above is a bit way off. think you should investigate it.

on the 5 speed tippys you can downshift without disconnecting cruise

AS Nexus said, on my KE, it will kick back a gear to 3rd by itself to keep the speed constant down a hill.

The KE is the only model Verada i have ever known the Transmission to do what they say it is ment to.

Every other verada i have got never kicks back gears down hills to help brake which is aparently what they were meant to do.

I wish they did because it is very handy rather than riding the brakes or manually downshifting all the time.

Does anyone elses 3rd gens do this?

I know in the Commodores the cruise will disengage if the car speed exceeds the set speed by something like 15km/h... Is the Magna one the same?

My TE will down shift going down hills but i have not had one steep enough to have done this while on cruise. I have seen it pick up 5-10 k going down the hill near Sunbury on the Calder Freeway. The other thing these autos will do is to hold a lower gear when going up a hill!

Interestingly I was off put when mine didnt brake going downhill since my dads Honda Prelude used to do it in 1985.

So wow Mitsu is only 15 years behind in development.

No I am sure that it is a safety feature. Somehow.

Are you sure it wasnt just self engine braking under load?

I thought the germans were first with this technology (cruise control that will actually apply brakes rather than just control the throttle position) back in the early 90s.

I tested this yesterday, i can downshift in my 4spd tippy (TJII) and it doesn't break cruise control, it's sweet :).

I need to learn how to downshift in my tippy.
you just put it in tiptronic mode (push the gear stick left) the pull it backwards (-) to make it shift down a gear:confused:

Have you check the wreckers for the standard stock cruise control? Aftermarket ones look quite bad sometimes. And yes Cruise control helps with long trips, if you intend to keep the car buy one.

i've heard cruise control can cost a fair bit to get installed aftermarket. And yeh i use cruise for a 30 min freeway trip, and i feel blessed. Cant imagine what i'd feel with a 15 hour trip hahah.
It scares the crap outer when you go up hill though :shifty:.

Also good for doing 50km without getting done for speeding I know its mainly meant for long trips but in adelaide we have quite a few roads that are 50km and without cruise i think i would get pinged every time :)
Mine does gain speed going down a steep hill and doesnt downshift just goes faster.

YES!
I use it on camms road in cranbourne (for those who know it). 50km/h zone and its a long wide road, they always seem to put cops on that road too  .

Some Commodore Executive models have a "power pack" - adds power windows and cruise to the standard executive package.

Standard VX execs didn't come out with CC standard. It was an option :)
