hi guys, i have a ts magna, base model with 5spd manual and a v6,
its my first car and iv just invested in a soundsystem for it.
i have- a pioneer headunit
pioneer 4 channel amplifier, gm4000f
mtx sledgehammer 12" in box, 55series i believe,
mtx monoblock amplifier for the sub.
also, i have a ten year old set of 6x9" 3 way kenwoods and the standard front speakers.
question is, what should i do abt the standard front speakers?
replace them with aftermarket 4 inches in factory dash mounts?
or move the map holder and replace it with a door pod and maybe a 6 inch aftermarket?
either way i want to replace the speakers, the questions are, have you replaced your 4 inches in the factory dash mounts? if so is it possible or WORTH replacing the speaker wire? if it is to hard then i dont want want to leave standard wiring as i want to 'do it once, do it right'
also the doorpods from my assesment seem the better option, therefore who has doorpods? what ones did you use and where from?
thanks for any help, some photos or links to installs would be nice, i think thats all, appreciate you even looked

No worries mate, first of all, yes, dont worry about the 4"s....It took me a few hours to re-route the wires but its really worth it in the end.
Go out and buy a nice pair of splits, or coaxles if you choose.
Also getting/making an angles speaker pod would be awesome, down the bottom they are still loud, but not very good staging.
Now you can take the map pocket off, but you will be left with unsightly holes, i simple cut a piece of MDF to size and vinyld it, which covers the holes and looks a bit better to.
Or, you can get the verada door trims, which have the speaker grille intergrated into the door card - Very classy
The good thing about putting them in the doors is if you decide to amp them you can throw 150W at the speakers and be safe, with them in the dash your limited to like maybe a 30W speaker???
Another hard part was getting the wire from the cabin, into the door, via the grommet, this was probably the hardest thing to do, took me about 50 mins for one door, about 30 for the other....Took a while but worth it in the end!
A few more options would be the tweeter, you can mount that either in the exsisting speaker location in the dash, or on the a pillars, or you can go crazy and make a fibreglass holder for it somewhere else.
I just chose the door cause i cbf'd mounting it anywhere else...just wanted it in there......
And yes you can replace the speaker wire, hell go 14ga why the f**k not.....but the stock one is fine....i mean if your gonna be running a pair of $300> speakers then yes upgrade the wiring.
hoped that helped!!!
And heres my door :)

thanks heaps, a couple of questions, did you have to cut into the door skins to put the speaker in?
also, verada door trims, what size speaker do they take where can i get them on short notice? i want to do this all this weekend which is coming up fast... can you get the card holders from a mitsubishi dealer? what is the pod in these like? what size speaker can i fit in?
thanks heaps for the picture nice install by the way, i think i will go for coaxials since iv already spent about 1500 on everything else, [and only an l plater working casual at coles also saving for university]
edit: hey tufftr i am mates with mgntzd and he sent me some pics of your boot install, good work on that by the way he just told me it was you

cheers mate!
Try the wreckers mate, there is jolly rogers in dandy you can call or try picka part, last time they had a rada there ripe for the picking, so tmorrow id ring up the wreckers and ask away.
The actuall speaker I THINK goes into the inner door metal frame, the door card is just a cover. But will take 6" - 6 1/2" quite happily

You want to run the wire going from the main body to the doors then you go through the grommet, If you have no wiring in your door then you may have caps and no grommet, if this is the case i suggest just going to a wrekcer or something and pulling some grommets off (fit better etc..)
If you have a grommet then try unplug both or one end and feed the wires through it that way and then reconnect it.
Any probs just pm me and I'll try explain it better or something

I recently replaced the stock setup in my TS wagon with a basic Kenwood system (H/U, 4" fronts and 61/2" rears). The rear speakers fitted really well into the cargo area trims. I placed the 4" fronts in the stock location on top of the dash.
The fronts will only fit after removing some of the plastic mouldings with a stanley knife. This takes a bit of time and is a bit fiddly but the results were worth it. Pretty good sound and no holes to fill when I sell the car - just refit the stock 4" speakers.
i replaced the rear 6" and front 4" speakers with Pioneer stuff, and the sound quality is a vast improvement over the stock rubbish. 4" fitting is fiddly as hell if the new speaker has a deep magnet. had to spend ages cutting away the dash underneath. worth it though!

hey guys I was able to get the cable through the body of the car and out to the gromet side, I tried running it through the gromet but had no luck as the thing didn't give me much room to work with, so I ended up slicing a hole on either side of the gromet and routing the cable in that way, it's not as neat as I would have liked but it still looks ok. I'll end up posting some pics if you like.
oh and thanks for the advice very helpful!

thats what i ended up doing when i installed remote central locking on a 2 door capri...so much wiring into those damn doors that the grommet wasnt big enough, i would have taken the grommet off and gotten a bigger one..if i could remove it in the first place...

i managed to get 2 runs of 12awg wire through the grommet with electric winows, central locking, electric mirrors....took like 30 minutes and a lot of hard effort and swearing to get it through, but so glad i did.

have u seen a 92 (ish) ford capri's grommets, the ****ers are way too small, i easily fit mine but that thing had the worst designed grommets and area for em..

omg blast from the past.
well the soundsystem is going well guys, and yeah i had some problems with the grommet and ended up dodgying it up just a little...
what i have learned after doing another couple of installs is get a head unit with 3 pre-outs, so much easier than speakerwire everywhere.
second, go for a beter brand over the amount of power a sub uses. that 45 series mtx is only 450w max and it pumps 130.2 db into the cabin! [yeah had it tested after a friend commented itd get over 120 easy]

Here's the photos of rear install in TS wagon as requested by Entropy.
I don't think this type of install will work on a TR as the right side void that I used would be filled with the rear wiper washer reservoir and pump.
(sorry about the quality of the photos ... had to reduce them to 15% size to get them through)
