Like most Magnas I had the dreaded hyd. tappet noises from the engine.

I swapped out the tappets and the noise has now gone. Four of the eight tappets where totally stuffed. The faces that touch the valves were very badly pitted.

However now the engine is blowing smoke all after a few minutes of start up. IT's burning a LOT of oil.

I can tell it is getting into the cylinders becuase the plugs are flowed.

I can't see how this oil is getting into the cylinders to cause this problem.

Anybody got any ideas ?

Yeah, sounds like oil is seeping through while it's off.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

I was thinking this but I can't figure out how this can occur if I didn't muck around with it. :?

I'll run a compression test tonight and check which cylinders are causing the grief by looking at which plugs are folwed.

Turns out it was the cylinder bores all glazed over. Both mech. and I have a sneaking suspsion it was the oil I use. Not mentioning it's name but it's magnetic :?

I got a brand new head springs etc, re ring and changed chain and water pump (whilst the engine was out ). Whole lot was $1450 incl labour.

sorry to be asking, but what are the tappets and where can you locate them? Reason I'm asking, is because sometimes, I get a tapping noise, possibly the same as what you are referring to, or more of a tick tick noise sometimes.
