Hey guys,
Looking at possibly upgrading my speakers in the future. Just wondering what 6x9's are out there that can handle some decent power rms and can play midbass plus treble just as well as a pair of 6" 2/3 ways can?
Looking at around $2-400. Hoping for somewhere in the regions of 100w rms, do these exist? Any recommendations?
Also looking at getting a pair of kappa perfects splits for the front, 100w rms. What do you reckon?

As I have said before, most of the infinity range is basically the same as JBL at a higher price, the cones and baskets have just been tarted up a bit. JBL and Infinity are both owned by Harmon Kardon, who is a heavy hitter in the audio business.
I'm not 100% sure if those splits are a 'rebadged' JBL model, but could possibly be. See if you can find some JBL speakers with very similar T/S data and I would hazard a guess that it is about 30% cheaper, and basically the same speaker.
I have answered the HQ 6x9's question in another thread recently, but for a whole heap of midbass in a HQ speaker at only just above mass-market brands, look no further than the Hertz HCX690's for $265 or so RRP. You should be able to wrangle them for about $230 I think.
The Vibe 6x9's are good too if you are looking for something more refined. Otherwise, for brands with pronounced mid-bass you are looking at JL, Cadence, the more 'American' brands.
A gross generalisation, but usually the 'American' brands have loads of mid-bass, a lower mid response but then have a quite bright high end. 'European' brands are usually alot flatter in response, the don't go for as much mid-bass, but go for strong mids that sound crisp and sharp, and not as bright trebles.
There are exceptions of course, but it somewhat holds true.

So you reckon the Hertz HCX690's? Got any specs on them?
As for JBL, i'll have a look around :).

From comments you have made previously, would it be right to assume that Hertz is one of these exceptions?

Yes, Hertz is one of those exceptions. Like I said, a gross generalisation, but not without merit.
Vibe is also another of the exceptions, it's a UK brand. There are others on the American side which are alot more 'Euopean" in their sound.
The TS specs of the HCX690's are available from the Hertz website, but I can post them here to save you the trip....

No, a sub will always sound stronger as it's got more surface area (which means it pushes more air, which is how sound is created ;)).
The specs on those 6x9's are VERY impressive. I think i'll have to invest in a pair when i upgrade my amp.

Yes, definitely worth a look. Not the strongest for SQ, but very good SQ with AWESOME volume.
Hertz make great stuff if your taste is dance/trance/techno and even R&B. Their newest sub range, the HXS series, the 12" is rated at 1800WRMS and costs $450. I dare anyone to find something rated at that much power for anywhere near the price.
The value of the speakers are incredible really, like $20-$40 over the major players (like Pioneer) mid-range pricing and beats them for SQ hands down.
I have decided that I am going all Hertz speakers after another recent auditioning of I car I listened to previously. It now has two of the HXS 12" subs. The system was great before, now it is everything I want so that's where I am going. Loud with good SQ, and reasonably kind to the wallet.
surely BOSS audio has something with 1800WRMS for much less than $450 :bowrofl:
on a serious note... M4DDOG, dont just buy speakers based on their specs. MitsiMonster obviously really likes Hertz, but not every one does.
Have a look at DLS, I am not a massive fan of some of there splits but they do have some very high end 6x9's (might even be 7X10's). I think they are around $400 but i would expect them to be among the best oval speakers you could get. I think they even have external crossovers.
Having said that, I havent heard the Hertz 6x9's either, they might be 'The Sh:t'. The only 6x9's that I have heard and thought were really nice were the OZ Audio Vector series. Definately worth a look (they are $200-$300)

I thought their range-toppers were $550! :bowrofl: :bowrofl:
Sif you'd even buy the stuff - let alone put it in your car! Makes Kenwood look like the kings of reliability and power..... I dont think they make any sub that will take 1800WRMS.... not even 1800W PMPO either.
DLS are nice too, but I do not think the mid-bass is as good. My opinion only. They are rising in popularity, especially with Hot4's plugging them every chance they get, but are still a bit hard to find. I thought their entry-level splits were $900 or so.....but I am happy to be corrected on that Fats.
There are quite a few 'speaker only' manufacturers out there, and alot are only just above the "Big 5" prices (Thats Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion) yet the speakers are exponentially better as that is all they do. These are the speakers you should be looking for for your system. Audition them, use your ears.
I'm off to change my avatar now....
Nah DLS have plenty of cheap stuff too. But I am not really a fan of it. The Iridiums sound nice ...but for $1500 they damn well should.
I Just mentioned the DLS 6x9's because I know they are designed to be very high end. The external crossover hints that they should be good quality at the very least.
Personally I would also check out Morel (If they even make 6x9's). I have Morel Hybrid Ovation6 Splits up front and I love them, so if I were after 6x9's I would look thre first. The Morels will offer a very different sound than the Hertz though, so it depends what you are after.

Avatar fixed Fats :P
Yeah, Morel make 6x9's with crossovers... I have no idea on pricing though. Alot cheaper than the Hybrid Ovations. Tempo series is currently listed the 6x9's at $138.38 but that seems too cheap. Pulse series at $153.34 - could that be per speaker rather than per pair??

Well well well MitsiMonsta I thought you where only going down for cables and stuff.... Have you got the HXS's in yet? I just like the fact that if you blow them up within the first year they will replace them for under cost :bowrofl:
Dam ill have to get my 15inch HXS now, still undecided but I may have to bit the cheese since you seem to think your car is loud lol
You will have to find a pic of the HXS, I have a couple that I took when I auditioned one, or I think if you go to rmaudio.com they have a pdf on the woofers and a pic is on there.

Yes I did go and get cables and terminals, but I have now decided that I will be switching my system across to Hertz progressively.
First stop will be the splits for the front. I am toying with the idea of the 3-way HSK-163's and getting Marty to do the install on them. If that proves too expensive, I will just go for the 2-ways.
After that would be the TWO subs, and yes will be HXS300's. I would look at the 6x9's after that, and once I have the amplification all sorted out - will have to be some monster monoblock, maybe two.
Now my biggest concern is whether to put those Audiobahn splits in, or sell them to somebody on the forums. They have had no use but were opened to check clearances in the trims etc.

Nah, I bought her a new Washing Machine and the deal was that I could get anything I wanted once the Washing Machine was replaced.
So yes, it will be open season soon!
I haven't sworn off JBL, I still think it is the best for Budget installs - but I am moving up in the car audio world. I might even go for a new Head Unit, and maybe even a screen.
If I decide to sell them, I will let you know. They aren't splits per se, but convertible coaxials. They don't come with proper crossovers, but you can get them. I only bought them as I thought they were proper splits. Oh well!
I think you'd be better off with your proper splits Tuffy. These are more for "I just upgraded my stock HU and now I want some better front speakers" guys.
