Ok but it covers the numbers for the auto trans too. I know you can see it from instrument cluster but it is there so that you can see it both ways. But yeah it looks good.
Im pretty sure with auto's you need to have the gear lit up at night otherwise its a defect. It looks really cool though.

Looks awesome mate!
Combine that with a 380 auto shifter and you'd be hard to tell the difference (if you didn't know of course hehe).

Mate that looks good as. Whered you pick the cover up from, would love to do that to mine, wonder how it would look on a sports. like i mean when ya switch it over to tips.

yeh the $20 mitsu replacements are a hell of a lot nicer than most aftermarket gear boots, and cheaper too!!

ok the boot is the genuine one for any 3rd manual p/n mr489997 & i grabbed the 4 screws p/n mf453030. remove cup holder and screw boot to cup holder/console. then i removed the gear change indicator from around the lever(4 clips). put it all back together & there you have it. i still have the gear indicator lights on the dash which i think is a more natural place to look than at console when selecting gears. as i said thought it looks pretty plain with the standard knob but will fit a different knob anyhow.

This wouldnt be much of a worry i dont believe as most ppl know where the gears are in an auto without looking, same as manual drivers dont have to look. Looks very nice indeed.

Is that brand new from mits spares? That's awesome!
Might price up a 380 gear shifter as well, i wonder if they'll fit .

Nah mate, its not a big deal, is only there for a reason, like said the instrument cluster can still read the gear and you cant start the car if not at P. So is nothing really. The mod is inventive but I might try something different.

I think on a TR/TS you would need the manual panel and I don't think it would fit over the auto selector well.

what do you mean by remove cup holder and screw boot to cup holder?
and by gear change indicator, do you mean the square panel that has PRND2L?

when i say cupholder i mean the console panel that includes cupholder. turn this upside down & u will c 4 screw holes. these r the holes 4 attaching boot. the gear indicator is the panel that has PRD321 on it. now on each corner of this there is a clip which holds it to the white/cream plastic thing:confused: . this indicator also has a light plugged into it. unplug that as well. the gear indicator can be left off. refit console panel & put ur knob back on. the clips 4 the indicator can be hard 2 get to. if need be u could remove back half of console(the whole bit between the seat inc armrest. took me bout 20 mins all up.

I'm so going to do this mod if it's only $20.
2 questions though:
1)So brand new at mits they're $20?
2)What model magna did you order off?
3)Does anyone know what a 380 gearknob would be worth? and
4)Would it fit?
lol yes i know i cant count ;).

yeah seen in done on a couple of cars before, mainly VT-VX commodores and it usually looks pretty good. If you also put on an aftermarket shifter knob it will look great.
Its not a defect by the way as the magna's have a gear indicator on the instrument panel, you don't need two.

best way to do this, is go wreckers and rip apart a 2nd gen auto, 2nd gen manual, and 3rd gen manual, and try between the 3 which gear boots work and which dont:)

pop your head around the back, there should be another screw which holds the OD Switch on.
After this just give it a wiggle and it should come off

Hmmm wow, but that's not too bad considering the aftermarket ones start at around $200. when i get paid next week i think i'll go down to mitsubishi and pick up the manual boot and plastic 380 gear lever. If the gear lever fits then i'll think about getting the leather one. Does anyone have a picture of the leather one? I've only seen the plastic one (in a vrx).

It does, but the 2nd gens have theirs on the side and it's basically the same mechanism, so i'm hoping that its the same deal with the 380. I'm hoping that inside the 380 gear knob, when you pull the lever up, it actually pushes a switch down *fingers crossed*.

If you want a white one then you will have to go somewhere that does leather and get them to make you one.
Try an auto trimmer.

The shaft firm enough to feel the clicks between gears, and besides it tells you on the dash. Haven't had the problem yet :).
