View Full Version : Remote Starter
Ok - just reading through the american forums - and a guy is putting on a much older diamante (early nineties) a remote starter.
Do you guys this its possible with todays Magna's? As I think this would be a great feature.
Scenario - its cold outside - you look out the window, turn your car on - 3 minutes later walk down, open it - and its already warmed up under the bonnet - and inside :)
What do you think?
PS: I just posted this on MOGWA - but I think there's more people actually visiting this forum.

its already here.
if i wanted to fork out another 200bucks, i could adapt that to my alarm system, so i could press a button on my keypad, and the car would start 8)
but they didnt have the part when i wanted it and i couldnt be bothered getting it now

ok, this sounds cool i guess but how does it actually work? i park my car in gear, and my alarm is only connected to the electrical system. how exactly is it supposed to start and idle my car? and wouldnt it just be a turbo timer?

ok, its a remote start, not a turbo timer,
here is the differences;
Remote start:
bascally allows you to 'start' the vehicle while you are not inside. good for like the inital topic start was if its cold, and you want to warm up your car (if u wanna argue about warming up your car, go the general section, there is a flame war there somewhere  )
usefull for: when your lazy, and you can see your car from you bedroom, and cant be botherd to get outta bed, but you need to go to work in 10 mins, so you remotely start you car, if your smart the night before you would of turned on the heater / aircon so you have a nice warm/cold car when you jump in
turbo timer:
is used to 'cool' the car, specially for tubo cars when youve given it a kick for the last hour boosting round town 8) its used so when you leave your car, the engine is still pumpin oil to your snails to try cool them down to 'normal operating' tempture. if you just turn you car off after an hours worth of redlining, then you could sease the bearing in your turbo. no good.
hope that kinda cleard thins up. people can correct if needed 8)

well you certainly dont need that booya your car is already cool enough
yeah these things have been around for a while and its easy to put on but i couldnt be bothered , my car is parked in the garage which fairly well stays the same tempreture all the time so its not to hot not to cold.

i know what a turbo timer is and what its used for, but they are also used to start the car and get the turbo up to full operating temp. like i asked before, how does it actually start the car and let it idle if its in gear?

manual = leave it out of gear
auto = leave it in park.
this presents a problem if you live on a hill

ahaha. if i did that, i still wouldnt go anywhere, cos inside the garage is that slippery concrete stuff  so id eitehr slide into my work bench or side into the freezer at the other end. oh, and it would be one big smoke room. bit like a sauna without the humidity
just smoke
aww. i crack myself up
the remote start would be hooked up just like if u were to hook up a button start ont he car, just in a switch to a remote.
looked into it abit aswell and it gets programmed or something so that unless its out of gear and the handbrake is on then the remote button wont start the car

I think you'll find it's illegal to use turbo timers here.
turbo timer ??
or engine start ??
i thought turbo timers were fine. wasnt too sure on the engine start though
so there shouldnt be any problems with engine immobolisers?
also - who here has one? or two.. :)

I'd imagine there could be an issue with both. It's illegal to leave your car running while unattended.
Engine immobiliser is different. It disconnects the engine from power while off. Nothing to do with remote starting etc.

Because it's illegal to leave your car running while unattended.
And just because a car rolls off a production line and is standard, doesn't mean it can't be defected for something. Being a production car doesn't mean it's fully compliant.

Does that mean we can sue car companies for selling unroadworhty cars or not stating the additional costs needed to fully complience a product for road use?
i believe thats the case
i cant remember which manufacturer had a problem that if you hid it from the back at some angle it would blow up ?

2way = if the alarm is going off the remote control ..which is a lcd type vibrates and beeps.. so you can get back to the car and kneecap the people.
It transmits to you upto 2km and you can transmit (ie start car/turn on/off alarm/panic etc) upto 500m away.

yes it does
thats why there are compliances and recalls when there are problems.

Remember a defect notice doesnt mean you have a defect. A police officer only has to suspect a defect to give you a canary.
It's up to the pits to say yes or no to the defect.

yes but there is a difference between getting a defect and something that is illegal or non compliant. there are certain regulations manufacturers have to abide by, like saftey and emision. so if they come with a turbo timer, obviously they are allowed to have a turbo timer! common sense people! wouldnt you think it was strange if you heard a new car was coming out with no muffler or cat. sat 5mm of the ground. had no seatbelts. failed all saftey tests. but was still being sold and driven on the roads? new car manufacturers have to abide by all the same rules we do. if we cant they cant. if they can-BINGO!!!!

But seriousely, id like to have that feature. I'll be in the market for an alarm in the very near future.... Which alarms have this feature?

Not to get too O/T but back to the turbo timers quickly.
I'd be very suprized if the actual turbo timers are illegal (seeings so many cars have them) more like your use of them could be deemed illegal.
i.e. If you leave the car unattended while running, that's illegal.
The fact it's a turbo timer running the car has nothing to do with it.
NB: This is only what I think is the law. I don't really know.

What about the Enzo? The Australian alotment have been sold but it's not street legal?
I'm just going on what happened to a mate. Sure he was attracting attention to himself at the time, (burnout), but the officer nailed him for a turbo timer. He was in the car at the time so it wasn't running illegally but the guy said having one was illegal. That was a few years ago and I don't know what the rules are now.

Yeah, I realise that. I don't know how it works or what's legal these days. Didn't know that a turbo timer came out on that 4WD either. I just know that leaving your car unattended while running is illegal. Plus, in this case, when we left our mates car, he'd have to leave his keys in the ignition. That sounds dodgy to me.

Sorry if I repeat some stuffs the others might have said because this topic was too long LOL..
To get the remote starter, not sure for the older magnas, the new ones require a recoding of the immobiliser in the key for the remote starter. Also make sure the remote starter kit comes with the handbrake safety switch. I find many aussie drivers leaving the car in gear and you wouldn't want the car to jerk off to a messy start by ramming against the garage wall.
As for a turbo timer, you will need a resistor in a magna because the engine immobiliser will get confused when u remove the key and lock the car, causing the engine to go haywire wondering why the engine is still running while the key is removed and car is locked, I know because I tried it in my own car before
I recommend the new Boomerang System for the all in one alarm system..

These remote starters have built in safety features. I have one and am about to get it installed. If the car is started via the remote with no key in ignition, then if someone tries to steal etc, as soon as they touch the brake the car will shutdown. Same goes if they try to open the bonnet or the bonnet is open it wont start or it will shut down the motor if it is running. They wont work unless the park brake is on and its not recommended to install into a manual car. It can be done but not recommended. I got mine off ebay has a remote transmitter which is 2 way so will notify you if motor is running, if alarm has been tripped etc. Brilliant alarm which also came with a free window roll up module. When alarm is switched on it will go to each window and roll up if needed until all four windows have been done. If anyone wants any info give me a buzz.
