Hey guys, I have some problem with My Car for some reason there is a rattle coming from my engine, when I start driving while my engine is warming up I keep hearing this rattle coming from my engine, it goes off when the car is @ normal temp, it might be the timing chain, but I don’t know where I got this rattle from , I’ve been taking care of my car a lot, I have just refilled my oil, coolant
Thanks

Do the 2.6s have timing chains? Would have thought they would have had a timing belt.

Anyway, your problem probably isnt the timing chain/belt - it would be a constant problem.

What your describing is probably noisey valve lifters when you start your engine - im 99% sure that it is an oil related problem - when you start the engine the oil is probably thick and drained to the bottom of the engine. The valve lifters, at the top of the engine have probably become sticky with age, and with little or no oil they would make a tapping noise/rattle.

I'd say you've switched to a thicker oil this time round, and with the colder weather, its taking a bit of time to pump around.

nope the old astron II's had timing chains. Infamous cause of the rattle you see in alot of 1st/2nd gens. Though i've heard theres a smaller guide chain that can cause the rattle as well.
Trance, is it like a rattle of a chain, or like a ticking noise?

i Warmed up my Engine this morning before i went for a drive to see if it made a differance and good news it did, which i haven't done for ages espially with cold Mornings comming up, i could't hear the noise at all, so its all good for now:cool:

lol warmin up your engine isnt gonna fix a worn timing chain.....

best thing you can do, apart from replacing the chains, is change the oil for Penrite HPR-30. Slightly thicker than what u'd normally use, good for old engines. will get rid of the rattles, (for a while anyway.)

I dont think the problem is a worn timing chain. If it was a worn timing chain then you would hear the noise constantly, not just when the engine is warmed up.

As I said before, I expect the problem is related to the oil

It sounds like the problem is the timing chain tensioner.
From memory it was a bit of an issue with the early 2.6's.

No you wouldnt hear the noise constantly. when the engine is revving the chain is underload and it doesn't flop around. At idle the chain can slap around which is what causes the noise. When my timing/balance shaft chains were ****ed i would get the same thing. Noisy when cold at idle. Once the car warmed up, and the oil circulated it was quite again. It got progressively worse over time, whereby as soon as i started idling hot or cold it would rattle.

it's usually the balance shaft chain that gets noisy anyway. The timing chain is actually a Duplex (basically 2 chains side by side) so it lasts alot longer than the single chain on the balance shafts.

Magna_evolution, try a thicker oil. as i mentioned earlier Penrite HPR30. Madmagna recommended that oil to me and i havent looked back since, it did wonders.

Penrite HPR30 for the old Astron II engines? Penrite actually recommends HPR15 for all of these...

Thats 15w-60 semi synthetic oil.

If you read Post #7 then you would know why Penrite HPR30 was suggested instead of the recommended HPR15.

Why do we want to use a thicker oil? Because the Astron II's in the 2nd gens used a hydraulic tensioner to tension the timing chain. The tensioner is controlled by the oil pressure. Using a thicker oil on an engine with a failing tensioner will help the tensioner to operate a little more effectively, in turn minimising the rattling chain. Of course it won't be as good as replacing the tensioner itself (along with the timing chain) but its a lot cheaper!

i mean if you care about cars, and your car specifically you should flush out the old oil, pour in some new clean oil, and also a new oil filter.

Otherwise you may aswell fill up the sump with sand

Oh i was thinking of doing this mod myself. It will help clean all the sludge out of my oil galleries. Which sand is best and should i pour a litre of degreaser in with it also? lol

Lately i finally bit the bullet and bought a few litres of Redline Fully Synth (15w) and a K&N oil filter... Man that stuff is liquid gold. I'm never using anything else again. So much quieter engine operation, no startup rattles, increase in performance and fuel economy... And all for the very low price of $160 (+$20 for K&N filter).:doubt:

haha, i doubt Mag_evo loves his car that much to blow $180 on an oil change:P

and yeah erik never mix different viscositys of oils.....so go the mechanics and get an oil change:)

My 1 year old TL VRX occassionally gets lifter noise on startup. It's not thrashed at all, mainly nursed through peak hour traffic. It's also dealer serviced with Castrol oil.

It used a bit of oil on the last check, and I seam to remember anecdotal evidence about Castrol oils being "consumed" more readily than other oils, so I'll have to ask the dealer about it next service.

Hey man, just ring around to different exhuast places (like Midas) around your area (search the net for store locations) and ask for a rough quote (if you know what needs replacing).

Then simply compare for the best price, or if arn't sure what needs to be done, take the time to drive in to a couple places to get quotes:P

It's just the muffler that's loose, cost you $120 for a generic straight through fitted. Theres a good exhaust shop on the highway in dandenong just before the tyre factory (driving towards city). They did my TR and was great.

This may not be for you Erik, but if your mechanically inclined, and on a budget, go to Jolly Rogers (like Pick a part) greens rd dandenong, look through the TR's, (theres usually a decent selection) take off the best muffler, take it home and fit it. Might cost you $30 or so and you get a practise run pulling one of a wreck, before you put it on your own car.

Again, some people are mechanically inclined and some are not. In your case it may be better to go have one fitted.

I reccomend Daalder Exhaust , BoxHill - 500 Station Street. They are fair and wont try to rip you off.
Also known to Ashneel and Cittris - Im sure they can confirm this.

Good luck!

Could always look for a stainless steel sports muffler on Ebay ;)
