View Full Version : Spoiler on boot too heavy

Someone put an aftermarket spoiler on my 96 TE and the problem is that the extra weight makes the boot lid fall down when the car is slightly facing uphill, or if there is a slight breeze. Which is not good if you have kids hanging around who may get their hands caught.
Is there something that can be done to make the torsion bar set up stronger to hold the boot lid up or am I best off to find another boot lid at a wreckers? Unfortunatley there have been holes drilled in the boot lid so just taking off the spoiler will create other problems.
Another problem with the spoiler is that it has not been painted to match the rest of the car, it is a matt grey while the TE is a metallic silver, hence it looks a bit tacky.
Thanks for looking

there are 2 different bars for the boot, just call up mitsubishi and ask for the ones for cars with spoilers

or if you're upset about the colours not matching, then i'd just get another boot from the wreckers.....

or buy a $1.50 broom stick and cut it to the right size and prop it up with that.

You can get gas strut thingys that will hold the boot up, same as whats on the bonnet.

Would this mod work on a car that has the normal hinges? I mean would it all close ok, etc?
Has anyone done this mod?

That's what I've been thinking would be the best solution. The broom handle idea, although cheap, does have it's drawbackslol
Fitting gas struts would involve modification and just sounds like too much off a pain. Could be done but would involve cutting holes and possibly welding. Also the gas struts would make it harder to shut the boot, whereas the torsion bar set up loses most of it's power when it is fully open and thus allows the boot to be closed easier.
I might still look into getting stonger torsion bars but to do a proper job Iwould have to get the spoiler painted to match the rest of the car. However from a maintenance point of view spoilers are a bit of a pain:shock:

Yes because it just mounts to the normal hinges somehow and gives them abit of extra strength, then they retract as the boot closes, just like what the bonnet ones do. I know someone on here has done the mod, cant remember who though. I was going to do it to my TR, but never got around to it.

just get the stiffer torsion bars, there like $30-$40, make a big difference. take 5 mins or less to put them in

Id say there is more than 2 types.. as the Sports/VRX and Ralliart ones are different from each other... and of course the exec type (no spoiler) are different again......

I dropped into the local Mitsi dealer and the stiffer bars are $60.
Went to a few wreckers to try and find a suitable boot lid but no joy, not too many gen 3 at the wreckers:(
However I did get some air scoops to put in the front bumper bar for $6 each:)

i need to get round to this too, with my spoiler and sound deadening on the bootlid, it's pretty heavy and slams with some force.

if the car didnt come factory with the spoiler it would still have the weight in the bootlid

I have the other problem.. i open the trunk and the boot lid nearly goes through the back window.. i reckon if i loosen the hinges we can get it into orbit.:P:D

Its kinda good.. As when you got your hands full the boot will always open instead of just lift a bit and stop..:P

They are standard on the adnance and/or other higher optioned Magnas, looks like a bit of a pain to mount them due to not having the correct holes in the correct place. However one fine day I shall remove the bumper and see how I can mount them. You just never know I might get a rush of blood to the head and put some ducting in so that they actually cool the front brakes.
At the mo I am busy painting the spoiler.
