I'll put it very simply. Modifying a ~1985 Carby Magna automatic is really quiet pointless. I would rather take the 50% gamble of putting all my money on red. Particularly if you're on a tight budget, save your pennies, and look for a better car. TE Magnas are as low as $4000 these days.
Don't worry about how fast your mates car is. If you save your money, you will be able to buy a car in stock form which will piss all over it.

unfortunatly id have to agree, unless your prepared to spend BIG bucks modding it (good turbo or s/C setup and rebuilt engine) itll never be fast enough to compete with later model cars.
save your money and buy somthing rear wheel drive or all wheel drive and start from there.
i hate to admit that an old falcadoor or skyline will give you better bang for your buck if you like to have a bit of a thrash now and then.
i love my magna, its a great daily driver, good performance for its age, comfy seats, and nice interior.
but i know my next project car will be an old v8 commadore, kingswood, falcon or similar. whatever comes up at the right price.
