View Full Version : engine spluttering, not holding idle well,

hey everyone, its me again, unfortunately, i am back with another tech problem .

My car (3L TE 5sp) sometimes will turn on, idle correctly, and drive great. But sometimes if i come to a stop (red light etc) then go to take off, the engine will just splutter and cough and if i push the clutch in, it struggles to maintain idle.

Since this problem is intermittent i have no idea what it could be ?

I thought it could be the MAF sensor, but then remembered that a faulty MAF usually causes the engine light to come on .... so .... could it still be that ?

what about the oxygen sensor ? could that cause these intermittent problems ?

Or even the throttle position sensor?

The weird thing is, the problem will occur, forcing me to pull over, then sometimes if i restart my car it will run smooth as.

Or even if i force it to idle (slihgt accelerator), it seems to "get over" its problems and run fine for a while ? how weird

all help is greatly appreciated !

oh yeah, would anyone know the price of a non-genuine TPS, and o2 sensor ?

cheers

hey mate, so you think my problem sounds like an oxy sensor or a TPS ?

would you know how to go abouts replacing/adjusting these ?

all replies are appreciated !

Had the exact same problem in my 3.0 TF 5spd. In my case it was the oxygen sensor.

Next time your car starts to do this, unplug the oxygen sensor from inside the car (will need to pull carpet back to the right of the passenger foot well). If it is the O2 sensor your idle should return to normal, and the car should drive fine (although you will use more fuel, until you can replace it).

since i am a noob, would you be able to describe the 02 sensor? i just don't want to unplug the wrong thing.

I'll take a pic of it this evening after work and post it up. :D
Ohh and an aftermarket O2 sensor is about $150-$170, so not too bad.

cheers phonic that would be great

also, is there any chance that anyone would be able to tell me how to get to the o2 sensor ?

i'v got the downloaded workshop manual but it doesnt' show how to get to the o2 sensor, only how to test it .

I'v peeled back the carpet now, and there is a rubber mat which i assume the 02 sensor is behind ? is this correct?

if you would be able to write me some general guidelines on where it is located im sure i can work it out .... im not a total noob at mech stuff lol

all replies are appreciated !

I had this exact problem with my TF not long ago... On a couple of occasions it actually stalled too

I took it to a mechanic and he found the problem to be in the leads... One of them was faulty, which in turn with the voltage spikes took out the distributor too :(

Worked out to be $550 inc labour for me... And they had the car for about a week to find the problem... Reason it took so long was that it was an intermittent problem, so yeah.... :)

any help on how to replace one of these would be great !

Sorry mate,

I got held up at work last night and forgot to take a pic for ya. But if you pull back the carpet (right side) in the passanger foot well, there should be a panel furthest towards the front of the car held in by 3 screws.

If you remove this panel, you should see a wiring loom, on my car the O2 sensor connector is right there (a white four (4) pin plug covered by grey foam tape). The colours of the 4 wires should be black, grey, white and white. This is the 02 sensor.

If you unplug this the car should still start fine.

man i must sound like such a spastic lol,

i just got home from work , and had a go at that. Only i found no o2 sensor !? Just something that looked like my ecu ? or some fancy computer thing

so i crawled back underneath and discovered that the bung for the o2 sensor is located on the drivers side ? (TE only maybe >?) , so now i might start unplugging things and starting er up lol

pics would mean 1000 words if ya could mate !

cheers

Hey Benny_TE, did you get the problem sorted? Was it the O2 sensor?
