Just ringing around for a air filter, 40ish for a Ryco and $140 for a K&N. Honestly is it really worth while, i like to give it a bootful, but am i really going to notice much difference?

are the K&N ones cleanable, cos maybe they could be a good investment.....

they work better after 3500rpm, but you could also look at it this way. how long are you gonna keep your car????? some people change stocko filter say around 20000km if they are keen. After 80000km and 4 filters, thats $160. K&N you can clean periodically and make em like new.

If you plan on keeping the car for awhile, a K&N will pay for itself (instead of replacing paper filters). I dont think there is much performance gain if at all. I picked one up recoed second hand for $50, so if you can get one 2nd hand, bonus!

You'll notice the engine will be happier above 3000RPM but nothing better underneath. Plus the imfamous dead spot may get you... Look for the Sticky started by Barry.

I had a K&N and switched back to stock.
Noticed no difference in performance, although the exhaust sounded better for some reason.
Takes 2 minutes to change a stock filter, a lot longer to clean a K&N.

I think if you're planning more mods, the K&N might be worth it, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

i've never felt this "flat spot" with my filter.

pff takes like 10 minutes to clean a k&n, most of the time is just waiting for it to dry. K&N will pay for itself, clean it as much as you want, plus they don't have a performance garuntee if their filters didn't give any performance (1kW gained is still a gain) Perhaps try the oval pod, i've heard/read these give more performance than the panels and you can get them cheaper.

Bain must be getting tired that people just keep starting new threads. lol

BTW If you are interested to get brand new Super Cheap is having a 10% discount on K&N panels starts soon I think

Is no big deal as I was recommended a cheaper place to get them in Perth for $120.00
Heard the original without GST is $109

Pod filter is definitly better than a panel.. You will get heaps more power from a pod filter

changing your air filter (wether a panel or pod) for performance is going to give you absolutely no noticebale gain (less than 3kw). If you are keeping the car for a long time a k&n is worth it as its cleanable and will work out cheaper for you in the long run than a standard one.

You should be able to get a k&n panel for 120ish btw.

why r lieing to these ppl... you get big power from pod filters... just SEARCH the forums and re-add the 250 threads that already exist :doubt:

by the way wtchme, im joking... i totally agree with u

even though im getting a pod cause i want some sound, i really cannot see how more power can be gained from a filter in the open air, probably only sucking in air from a certain side/angle, compared to a panel, where all the air is passing through all the filter.

Hahaha... I had two dyno runs that showed an 11HP difference between paper and K&N.

But yeah, don't do it for performance :bowrofl:
It's purely the economics of replacing the paper each service.

Yes is good idea but having needing to wait, for some of us, having it delievered, not sure postage cost and being not at home most of the time. As my lousy housemates don't really care about parcels. Dont like the idea of LEAVING a $100 bucks product at the front door. Not to mention rain etc.....

It is great for some people. But for me I will go straight to the shops if is cheap enough.

I found it worth it for the simple reason you dont have to keep buying paper ones.

No difference in performance.

:stoopid:
ive tried various setups including pods and panels. pods are good for sound, stock intake is the go.
I've hotted up my toy a fair bit, 161kw's on a dyno (dyno's are ghey by the way) with a stock panel filter. Save your pennies for something else

When I was doing heaps and heaps of country driving, much of it on dirt roads, K&N was the way to go. A paper filter every 2-3 weeks (I was doing 2000km per week) - that fine dust plus all the insects clogged them up real bad. Yep $40 a pop - K&N paid for in 2 months!

You will gain power from a K&N, but it won't be much maybe 2-3kw. Like everyone's been saying the main benefit is its cost saving over the long run. Just make sure if you get one you don't over oil it.
Old Nissan RBs have problems with K&N's because the air flow meters have a heating circuit so that they burn off any residue that forms on the metering wire, and after a while they can have trouble burning the extra oil residue that a K&N can deposit on the wire and hence the engine runs rough due to incorrect signal from the air flow meter. I am not sure how the Mitsi air flow works but this could be causing problems for magnas too.
I will get one next time, I put in a new paper filter because I thought the K&N's were much dearer than they were.

all i can say is have a looks at the faster NA's of this forum ... they care very little for their CAI ... dont make much difference cept for as KB said .. replacing the stock filter all the time is a hasle and not cist effective

Thanks guys, I ended up buying one anyways as my paper one was filthy, and i get a 20% discount at autobarn (i know these blokes arent cheap, but ive got mates that work there and i know the owner, he loves magnas and has a pimped out TF wagon) anyways so it only cost like $100. Ill fit it on saturday, not expecting much from it except that i shouldnt have to buy a new one.

Pods must be enclosed in a box of sorts to be deemed legal(cai box or just sectioned off from the engine bay)

yeh 1-2kw is very noticeable... not... forget air filters as a performance mod for gods sake... other forums talk about what motor or turbo etc they're going to put in for a performance increase but this forum in obsessed with talking about what air filter to get for a performance increase..

everyone get over the air filter threads... they are awesome cause you can keep them basically forever.. thats it... dont buy one because you want to increase your cars power

thats a bit of a rash generalisation... CAI does have a place in modding ..it makes a bigger effect on some than others but it is a worthy mod to do

if ur cai costs u $50 and pod / panel 100 .. and u gain 4 KW's from it then i would consider it very woth it ... as ppl tend to go buy the 1kw to every $100's ...

so what im saying is it is a worthy mod but dont expect to be able to walk on water with it

if people dont want to spend to much money on performance mods then this is just wasting there time...... $100 or so on nothing as far as performance goes.. mite aswell put that towards a rear muffler which is proven to increase performance... face the facts dude, not the rubbish floating around the forums from ppl like you who think filters are an awesome performance upgrade and make new comers think the same
