hi all need some help, the engine has been recoditioned, crank/crankshaft/camshaft/pistons/block/lifters/new waterpump....etc... same time i got the timing chain kit fixed as well, about a week ago the head went, the reco engine cost me $1400 and the head cost me $1200+ and a service aswell as checking everything else... The car is now rattling again sounding like the timing chain but how can that be when its been replaced? the rattling doesnt happen when the cars cold only once its warmed up and its pretty loud like b4 i got the timing chain done, but it only happens in drive and not in park,, or really at higher revs, only when its idling.. I can also how a slight tapping noise inside the engine, can only really here it if you have a good ear, not sure where its coming from though. I spoke to the mechanic and he rekons that he has to take off the side of the engine, which = timely procedure = costly procedure!

I have spent too much on this car thus far and i really want to keep it, and im sure it will serve me well very soon :doubt:

If you guys have any input in this matter it would be greatly appreciated. It was running like new when i got the head done and they rekon they didnt touch anything to do with the timing, could be as easy as just tensioning it? btw it started off as a very slight rattle, could hardly hear it and now its getting louder,,, i did about 400kms and then it started rattling.!

Thanks in advance guys :)

Dave...

Sounds like a backyard mechanic to me took you for a ride mate and how

Go for a secound oponion with written quotes and explain to them what has happened if anything you might be able to go to small claims court to get most of your money back to get your car fixed properly elsewhere buy someone who does know what there doing and knows the magna's.

Are you also saying that they charged you $1200+ just to reco the head ??? if so then that would have to be the most expensive reco head ever for a 2.6

This is not good the money you have spent could have gone to a complete recoditioned engine from R.P.M or the likes.

hydraulic tappets is the only noise left
if you have done everything else to the engine and it was done properly
what was the warrenty on all this work
take it back to where the work was done and ask

a nob-head bro in-law did it, dont trust him so i aint taking the car back there. The head was done by a diff mechanic, bro-inlaws a diesel mechanic but yeah dont trust him.

a lot of members/owners use a better quality oil
if the noise doesnt go away then you need new hydraulic tappets
not too expensive ?
try that

but why would it come back 400kms down the track and start rattling? does the rattling sound like a timing chain rattle?

but yeah i might try that, thanks 4 the help m8!

Thanks 4 your reply m8, yeah it was done by my bro-inlaw, yeah dont trust him naw do i like him. the reco head was $450 i think, and $450 for labour or some crap, i'll give ya more info when i finish work and post what they did up here. I didnt get a reciept for the reco motor, family ya kno :(, but i have one for the head and stuff.

Thanks for the reply guys, but yeah im not happy, if i knew this was going to happen i would of just bought a manual and newer car. :(

i thought id post it up on here, so i dont get screwed around and ****, bloody annoying! i dont want to have to fork out another grand or so!

ps> does anyone know any quality mechanics around the geelong area?

contact "old fart" a member he did his own timing chain
he may have some advice for you

there is an outside adjustment on the timing chain tensioner its a cover plate with 2 bolts
on the side of the engine-an easy adjustment -- that might do the trick

Yeah gotta hoist her up to do it but yeah?

Did you see or buy the timing kit was it the full kit 2 chains giudes gaskets etc.

If it was done right it should not have come back and all other componets checked before re-installing like the oil pump for damage or maybe it was not installed correctly. This is what happened with my car when I had mine done it tirned out the prevous owner had installed the oil pump gears back to front causing the giude to be on an angle thus causing uneven wear to the guide and damage to the chain.

If you can do it yourself you will find a little cover on the timing cover with 2 bolts take this off you will find another bolt loosen this bolt a little enough to put a screwdriver on the adjusting lever next to the bolt and just use finger pressure on the lever to remove any slack there maybe and then tighten the bolt while still putting finger pressure on the lever so you don't let slack on the chain again then just put some gasket goo on the little cover as long as the gasket is still ok and bolt it back on then start the engine and see if it's gone or not.
