if it is a double DIN H/U hen you will need to get the little piece of plastic that covers the hole underneath teh new headunit - acts as a tray - i am sure you could get one from a wreckers or so.
and yes the wiring is simple. if you look in a Gregory or Haynes manual it has the wiring colours / designations for you .

depends on expereince
first time - i would allow a good couple of hours!!

I wouldn't solder myself but rather recommend ringing around car audio and auto stores to see if you can get the correct wiring harness tos uit your head unit and car. They go for about $20 or so and make it simple and very neat. Each to their own of course :)

im very glad this double DIN head unit CAME with the car.
Also very handy that all i had to do to install an amp was only remove the cigarette lighter bit underneath and that gave me access to all the wires

yes - if you can get access to adaption wiring looms it is nice - but if you can't well - good old solder and shrink wrap is better than twisting wires and using sticky tape!!
(no - i have never done that with a stereo, trailer lights attachments maybe, but not stereos ;) )

I think the previous owner must have been under the influence of something when they traded that car in. :) Either that or they just couldn't be stuffed.. sound like me actually.

you gotta pull out the whole centre console.
it will be screwed into the car behind the centre part of the console.
the easiest way is to lift the part around the gear knob - it is just clips - a bit of grip on your fingers and pull it up - then pull out the ash tray and cig lighter section - again clips - except there will be 4 wires - one for the light in the ash tray, one for the cig lighter light and two for the power on the cig lighter - then you can pull out the section surronding the head unit - there is 6 clips and two screws - not hard at all.
