View Full Version : Which brake set up?

My 96 TE is making funny noises (squeal, squeal, squeal) and judging by the regularity it is brake rotor related. It may be wheel bearing but usally a crook bearing will make a constant noise, rather than a once a rotation noise)
I have read somewhere that the factory stock set up is not adequate and the rotors are prone to warping.
I am thinking there are two ways to overcome this, one is to fit better quality slotted rotors and the other is to provide more cooling air.
I did pick up some air scoops for the bumper (although I don't have the correct bumper and some modding will be required to fit them) which where quite cheap from Mitsi.
Now I am figuring that I get some ducting to suit and cut a hole in the internal mud guard, it should be possible to get more air onto the rotors to cool them.
Anyone been there and done that?

if my brakes were making funny noises id take it strait to a brake shop and get it checked out.

If it was a grinding noise or it was using brake fluid I would be concerned.
However a squeal usally means that something is not quite right but not drastic.
I am going to change the suspension set up back to stock next week so I'll get a chance to see what the problem is.
Thanks for the warning and yes if I did not have much experience with brakes i would be going straight to a pro.

You didn't mention wether it squeels during breaking, or just plain driving. If during breaking, may just be break dust, or low on pads. Warped rotors you can feel when you break. But yeah, upgrade rotors to slotted ones and some better pads, and it will stop so much better.
I upgraded mine to RDA slotted fronts and rears, and using the basic RDA pads, and damn it stops so damn hard.
One of my rear wheels was making the same noise few days ago, took it apart and the whole rotor was out of align. So I took the bearing out stuck it in a vice and it visibly wobbles. This causes the rotor to be out which scrapes on the pads and makes noises. Put it all together and will buy the part and fix it later. Nothing serious, but yeah get it checked if you dont know how yourself.

Like I said, hopefully I'll get the TE on axle stands this week to change the struts and see if I can spot any problems. Don't think I will need the extra stopping power in family taxi mode, also I have read that the offset to better stopping is shorter brake component life and more brake dust. I am assuming that it has standard brakes at the moment and those are good enough for the sort of driving I do with it.
To a certain extend it is the quality of the tyre that dictates the stopping distance and as long as the brakes are capable of locking the wheels on dry bitumen then you really don't need much more braking power for everyday commute driving. If I was to fang it through the hills on a regular basis I would invest in some performance brakes (and leave the lowered, stiffer suspension on it). However I rarely go anywhere without the family and they don't like it when I go fast around corners, well my 5 year old son don't mind too much but the girls are a bit nervy.
