You might find some info in this recent thread

Basically TJs have an internal filter that doesnt require changing.

Not sure on prices but a mechanic will do a better job as they can flush it properly instead of just draining and refilling.

I have another question about that thread wat SARRAS said about youll drain about 6L of tranny oil so put back 6L but the book says that tranny holds 7.8L of fluid?

not bagging ya but if the filter dosent need to be changed then why is there a filter in the first place:nuts: i would definetly change ur filter (ask urself would u change ue engine oil and not the filter.to many ppl dont give the tranny any services) and make sure u get the gasket and o-ring. oh yea dont forget to clean the magnets in the bottom of the tranny oil pan and only tighten the oil pan bolts 1 or 2 turns pass hand tight cos the bolts arent all that strong. i know cos i snapped one and left half in the tranny housing. that was a pain to centre punch and drill and use a easy-out to get it to come out:rant: good luck with it, any problems just ask and im sure someone will help.

with ur question when u do it ur suposed to undo the oil coller lines first then put the car in nuetral and run for 1 min but no more than 2 mins this should drain out about 2lts then undo the drain plugs and drain the other 5 . now if u dont get 7lts ur not doing it right and thats what the manual tells u to do. cos just draining it from the drain hole wont get it all out , the converter has oil in the and so dose the other gears (which ur not using cos the car isnt moving) also the only way to get a proper level reading is when its warm. ie need to take it around the block to push oil into all the gears and to get it warm before u can get a real reading. anymore questions just ask.

ps. when u fill it go and by a 1metre lenght of clear 2cm hose from bunnings or some place like that and a funnel. just push 1 end of the tube into the level check hole and the other on the end of the funnel cos it makes it easy to fill up then, just takes a little longer.
