Lately I have noticed that just off centre my power steering seems to kick in a bit more than normal, so I'll be turning the wheel slightly and then suddenly it feels like it's floating and the wheels are turning more than I expect. Only happens at about 15-30 degree turn of wheel.
Any ideas what that might be caused by? The steering fuild was flushed about 25,000 Km (12mths) ago.

just outta curiousity mate - how does your steering feel when the engine isnt running? - I have noticed that with my car - when the engine is running, i get a similar thing as yours, not the jerking bit, but it feels "floaty", I found with mine when the engine isnt running, it is quite easy to turn the wheel left to right about 30 degrees each way - with a rather noticable clunk just past centre each way.....as I have perused around dealerships in the past - i find the other Magnas there are quite heavy to try and move the wheel (and no, they are not in the locked state as some would want to say)
How does it feel on the road in general - does it seem like it needs correcting alot to keep a straight line, affected by bumps in the road more than it should?
I have noticed with mine as well when i move the steering wheel say 30 degrees left or right hand down (again with engine running), the wheel will settle, but then slowly move back to centre about 5 degrees by itself......keep us posted as to how you go with it, as I have been trying to get my dealers attention over it, and am not really getting anywhere

My KJ wheel is damned HEAVY when there's no power assitance, brakes also.
Praying that the engine never dies or snap a belt whilst car is moving...
Moving 30deg is probably just freeplay, does the tyres even turn?
(Assuming dry steer.)

To answer you question - yes the tyres do turn - there is the normal 5-10mm free play like everycar has, but I have compared what I have described against my old TJ and many other magnas in the dealers, non have the same feel as mine - it is booked into Mitsu again on the 19th for another look, this time im putting my foot down.......its not normal - but, anyway, i dont want this tpoic to go too far off-topic, it isnt my thread, I was just asking if BirdMan has the same kind of symtoms as mine

To answer the above questions, the steering is fine most of the time. It is out of the free-play zone and the wheels have begun to turn, then they seem to turn a bit more freely for a fraction of a second. It feels like it's hit a slippery patch/ice on the road and then returns to normal feel. I have noticed it driving and when reversing out of the driveway or just turning the wheels when sitting still (engine on). Have not tried with engine off, but would imagine that it would be completely different.
I changed the power steering belt about 6 mths ago, so it might have become a bit looser. On a couple of occasions a full lock turn produces a squeal, so belt tension is a possibility.
cheers
