View Full Version : Will 3rd Gen VRX Factory Muffler bolt on to standard 3.5 xi?
Hi guys, just a quick question. Will a 3rd gen VRX factory muffler (ie. the one with the single downward pointing tip) bolt straight on, to replace the stock KH 3.5 muffler (ie. the one with the two small outlets)?
Also, does this free up any performance gains at all, or do you just get a nicer sound out of it?
Thanks
Justin

yes, very likely.

That's a sports muffler you are thinking of with the downward pipe, and yes it will bolt straight on without any hassles.
The vrx muffler has a tip and wont fit without modification to the bumper.
The sports and vrx muffler are identical except for the tip. I have done this mod and i believe it's freed up a little in the top end (slightly) and you get a nice note between 2-3k revs, but it's no where near as loud as an after market sports system. But i like that.
Mitsubishi claims that you will get a gain of 8kw at the engine, which is what, maybe 3-4kw at the wheels extra?
But i'm just happy with the sound of it :).
Hi, thanks for your replies. Picked up the VRX muffler from a fellow aussiemagna member ("Sports") this morning.
Being a VRX muffler, the end pipe points straight out, which means that I'll have to have a different tip put on, to make it accommodate the stock KH rear bumper (which doesn't have a cutaway for exhaust).
Will try to get it fitted tomorrow.

It'll be cheaper and probably look nicer if you just get the bumper cut. But yeh that's what i said you'd have to do :).
I got the TL VRX muffler fitted to my KH today.
Still have to get the exhaust end-tip sorted out, but apart from that, the components bolted straight on.
I'm not sure if anyone else who has put a Sports/VRX muffler onto their standard 3.5's have observed similar, but I actually hardly notice a change in the exhaust note.
I guess it sounds a bit deeper between 1000 and 1200rpm, but between 1200 and 2600rpm (yes, I drive slow!!) it was much of a muchness between the VRX and stock 3.5 muffler IMO.
If I have the windows down and sunroof open, I can sort of hear the exhaust slightly, way behind me, but with the windows up and roof closed, there's really hardly any difference.
Performance wise, maybe the engine seems a bit freer, but it could just be the placebo effect kicking in!!
I'm thinking 2 possible reasons for my findings :
1. My original muffler which was rusted out and had over 170,000km on it was probably so sh*tted itself that it was much more "growly" than it should have been. --> Therefore the VRX muffler might be around the same noise level!
2. Are Veradas more insulated than Magnas?

1. Quite possible, but standard magna mufflers are pretty decent in the rust department.
2.Yes i am under the impression that veradas have more sound deadening from what a verada owner was telling me.

Anyone else put a sports muffler onto a Verada without any other exhaust mods?
Reason i am asking is the misses wants a bit more sound out of the KJ AWD but i dont want any more or as little as possible sound increase in the cabin. I have heard that some can drone while cruising on 90/100km/h which would drive me nuts.
The AWD seems a fair bit louder with its exhaust over the FWD anyway so might not be as noticable. Do the KJ AWD AND KJ FWD run the same rear muffler? They look the same with the twin outlets but as i said, the AWD sounds so much beefier and sporty than the FWD. Or would that just be the different exhaust setup through the rest of the car becaause of the AWD stuff?

They use the same muffler but the piping is different. A lukey LR2779 is fairly similar to a VRX/Sports but is a bit more free flowing. They dont drone much.

some AWD came with the VRX lukey muffler and some didnt yours probably did because its a fair bit louder a beefier and is there only one pipe coming out the end of your AWD

I drove a TL VRX the other day and sounded like it had a standard exhaust. Maybe the VRX muffler changed after TJ because the TJ VRXs have a definite sound difference.

The KJ AWD i have has the twin pipe setup like my KH but the KJ AWD is definately louder than my brothers KJ FWD.
Just an observation......From TJ Series 2 onwards, the muffler became a silver colour. It still had the dual downward-pointing tips, but the colour had changed from black to silver.
I notice these silver TJ II & TL/TW mufflers have a bit more of an exhaust note than your standard TH or TJ1 muffler. Can anyone else testify to this? If you listen to a stock TL idling, you can hear a definite exhaust burble, which the 3.0 and TH/early TJ 3.5 (ie. with black mufflers) lacked.
Also, TJ Sports mufflers seem to be the same size as stock mufflers, except that the end tip is a single outlet. However, the TL VRX muffler which on my KH (bolts straight on) is a fair bit smaller and is the silver colour.
My ex-TL VRX muffler is only the slightest bit louder (by no means unpleasant), and best of all, it doesn't drone at all on the highway. I normally drive very conservatively, and you would be hard pressed to pick any difference in sound volume in the car. But if you put down the windows, you can just hear the exhaust. However, if you give the car a bit more throttle, the exhaust does make itself heard significantly more.
Also I do notice a slight gain in torque. My KH can now hang on to 4th gear around 60km/h and pull its way up slopes, whereas previously it would kick down to 3rd. Fuel economy doesn't seem to have been affected.

I recently put a brand new factory KH rear muffler on the back of my KH. The origional one was black and the new one is silver. Doesnt sound any different at all. I'm guessing typical mitsubishi just became tight on the paint and stopped painting them.
I do know what you mean about that definate burble sound from exhaust from later models but i'm sure they dont run different mufflers for different series verada's such as ke, kh, kj, kl etc.. I'm guessing the extra burble might just be the rest of the exhaust slightly different or different engine mamagement as the later models had more KW's therfor something is different somewhere and the burble might be as a result of that and not the muffler.
That burble you are talking about is the difference between my KJ2 AWD and my brothers KJ2 FWD. The AWD has more of that burble and a better note.

I havent driven in a TL only been a passenger in one but i do own a TJ and they both have the same looking exhaust but the TL definatly sound louder and beefier from the inside and outside definatly noticable

I rang Mitsubishi today and the TJ and TL sports muffler have the same part number meaning they are the same. I'm guessing the plumming must be different elsewhere such as 1 less muffler/hotdog along the line maybe???
Does anyone know if the FWD and AWD run the same rear mufflers?
I saw a video in here of an silver sports AWD doing donughts on an oval and it sounded much beefier than my KJ AWD with a standard muffler.
Does anyone know if that is a standard sport exhaust on that AWD sports in the video?
There must be a fair bit of difference between the standard and sports muffler if it is a standard sports exhaust.
Oh yeah, and Mitsub are asking $360+gst for a sports muffler. I can get mitsub stuff at cost so will be interesting to see what it comes down to. Bit rich for a muffler in my opinion.

I'm not sure. Have never looked. The guy at Mitsubishi today did ask if it was a sedan or wago when i was asking about the sports mufflers. Maybe there is a difference.

I'm also guessing the GTV Verada's have the same muffler on them as the Sports?
Also, does anyone know if the rear muffler is different on the AWD to the FWD?
Thanks guys.

TJ's and TL's have the same mufflers through them
eg: TJ executive + TL ES = stock muffler-2 pipes
TJ sports, VRX + TL VR, and VRX = sports muffler, single pipe
To my knowledge, the AWD's have the sports muffler on them
The rest of the system is exactley the same

The GTV has the same muffler as the sports/VRX. I priced mine from a GTV. Can get them for $180 through work.

I have a standard muffler and mine has quite audible burble but I only really hear it when around the back of the car when idling. I first noticed it when I went to pick up my car after I bought it. I was waiting in the car yard while the salesman fetched the car. As he drove it past me and out to the front to hand me the keys, I could hear a definite burble to the exhaust. I remember it clearly as I wasn't expecting it from a smooth v6. Nevetheless, it could be just standard thing to make them sound sweet when revving out.

Sweet. thanks for all your help guys.
Hey there No Name. I'm guessing you work for Mitsub. Where abouts?
I have a contact that can get me stuff through chaddy at cost price. I wonder if your price is the cost price?
Thanks again for your help.

Yeah i work for a Melville Mitsi over here in the west.
Im guessing you would get a similar price. Cost a bit more to get it fitted unless you do it yourself.
