depends what condition the car is in to see if everything is worth fixing
no point spending $1000 on it to sell for $1500

To be honest, the cost of getting the front end fixed will be pretty much what your car is worth.
If u have a look on the trading post and ebay, people are struggling to sell their TR's for $1500.. They are becoming a lost cause for some reason.
In my opinion. If you NEED money, you could try and sell the car for about 1000-1500
OR
Id recomend just keeping it while you save up for a better car.
Try not to spend to much money in getting it fixed up and looking good. Its not gonna increase its value.
4cyl Magna, Auto.. not very popular at all these days

Just Trade the thing in as why spend money on a S.hit Box when you can spend it somthing else, DONT FIX IT just get rid of it as it is
If you are will to fix all up it only gonna be about $200 bucks more.
A member from MCA sold her 93 3.0 V6 manual for $2700 in perfect condition so your looking at
1, Selling it privately at $1800
2, Trading it in for and i would say about a grand. But it could be more depending on how much the car you are buying
[TUFFTR]
04-06-2006, 01:55 PM
Yeah erik its not even worth servicing, just try and get rid of it for as much as you can.
as people here have said before, fixing the front end will outweigh the costs of selling it in good condition.
if your gonna sell it, sell it now, before they just lose even more money.
sorry dood not much you can do besides keep inside nice and clean/vacummed/smelling fresh and keep outside clean/wash/wax/tyre shine

lol as nice as that was of you to post that link up, hes in NSW!, would be to much farting around!
Buddy without sounding harsh, this car is a bottomless pit that you could through money at forever. Fixing the front end will cost you a few hundred, and you wont get a single cent of that back come time to sell it.
Have you looked at some financial options, like selling this and getting a small loan to purchase a reliable 3rd gen, and throw your money at small interest repayments instead of this bomb? It's more than likely to end up way more economical in the long run, and you get the convenience and comfort of a relatively new car at the same time.
Food for thought I guess.

That would i plain to do, 1st i gota pay off my cc then i'm going to get a small loan of 8000 for a 3rd gen, but only thing is my 2nd gen to sell it, it sounds like i might get $1500 in good nick if there no annoying problems with it, hope that dosn't happen in the next few monthes, becaause once the loan gets approved i'm selling my 2nd gen straight away and getting a 3rd gen.
If possible, get a personal loan from a bank to pay off a credit card. Much much lower interest rate (probably 10% less). That's only if the cc is a huge debt.

Mate i'm being honest here, you wont get more than $1000 for your car. Not with the damage. My car was in perfect order apart from boot holes and a few bad paint spots and the most i was offered was $500, turned out cheaper to just trade it in and get a couple of thousand knocked off the markup lol.

that's the only way to get money back on an old car. Trade it in, and bargin the hell outta them!
p.s. avoid car yard finance, try going to someone like anz or the commonwealth bank for a personal loan. car yard finance isnt worth it unless your getting something big

1st & 2nd gen Magans are getting REALLY unloved these days at the auctions, tons there getting passed in and even TS V6 wagons are failing to reach $1500 for a low-mileage straight example.
The early TE/TF Execs with high mileage are touching $5k now too.
... in short, not worth fixing anything on the car if you're selling it.
Just get anything that needs fixing to pass RWC; just go to a decent mechanic/tester and get him to do a pre-test & tell you what needs doing to pass RWC.
But don't get ripped off there either. :doubt:
Your nose dint don't have to be fixed to pass unless its got sharp edges or other dangers.
As long as your tyres are legal, brakes work good, glass not cracked, all the lights work, steering is good and you don't have any major oil or fluid leaks (shocks, engine/tranny, CVs - if they're damp, degrease them first!) ... it should pass.
Around mid year = semester break, could be a better time to sell an old Magna to a uni student for their first car too. Best time is usually Jan/Feb when uni starts.

Ive found around here magna prices are pretty good. You do need to remember that car is 14 years old now. Getting up there a bit.
Kilometres plays a BIG difference on the magna sale value i have noticed. Most are pushing 200 - 250 and struggling for that $2k mark.
Curious when i get around to selling mine (lookin at end of year). Its a 93 TR 4cyl AUTO, which has travelled an entire 120000. Prob about 135 - 140 by end of year as i drive a fair bit. Will have all its lil probs cleaned up by then.

yeah mate is sounds like you have a bad financial history(you said banks will not approve of your loans).
So you know what i would do ?
Get a loan on an APPRECIATING asset, one that will make you money. It is pointless fixing this car (say $500 for it to be immac), getting $1k for it, getting an 8K loan, chucking money at it (you know you will), then in 2 years time you will be in the same situation wanting to upgrade your car but with a nice 8K debt this time. Remember 3rd gens DEpreciate at a stupid rate (i own one), so you will not only lose 2-3K in the same amount of years, but you will have to pay back the interest off your loan also....
so get a loan (if you must) then i would put it towards training/education/qualifications/a house/shares/crystal meth(jk)/ anything that will make you money. Then you will be happier in 5 years time when you have 20k and can buy whateva you want !
Just my advice !

If you really want a new car and are serious bout selling it then sell as is. Check out the trading post etc and see what cars the same as yours are going for then check redbook and go from there. A bloke who works with my partner picked up a nice TF sedan for $3000 in good condition from the trading post in melbourne!
Good Luck! :)

Im with Leigh.
Narurally, people get angry and disappointed when the Bank rejects a loan...the things is:
They calculate carefully! They add up your running monthly costs and then subtract this amount from your regular income.... they money that is left after all expenses are paid seems to be less than the cost of the loan; thus the Bank sais No go. - They might actually be doing you a favour with this...no point in financing a car if you are unable to cover the loan and would loose the car after a few months!
Personally I do not believe in buying on Credit - If I dont have the money to buy and pay for something new, I just wait until I have the total amount of money freely available.
Dont get something just because it looks good - make sure that you can actually afford it in the long run...
Oh...and dont spend another cent on your old car! Like all other said: Its just not worth it!

If not just trade it in for your TJ!

The 90,000km service (timing belt change) is around $700 at Mits. The 110,000km service is also a bit expensive from memory because the auto gets flushed/serviced, budget around $400-500.
If the car is a cheap price this might be why...

As said before, don't buy a new car because you just want a 3rd gen magna. Only buy it if you can afford it. You say you have CC debt and that you're on a low income. Then do you really think getting an 8grand loan is going to help? You need to look at WHY you want to change cars, if it's simply personal image, forget about it. If your current 2nd gen drives fine, then why the heck change? There are ALOT worse cars that you could be drving.

True but those "10g" cars will have less k's and less problems. I agree with KB, don't rush into this decision. Save abit of money first. Also KNOW that you definitely have this better paying job before you commit to a loan. I would seriously consider trading in the TR on this car, might get it $1000 cheaper, i doubt you'd get that if you sold it privately.

Ok that's fair enough it's your decision, but the problems you have with your TR can easily occur on your TJ. Could be coming close to replacing the alternator/battery as it's getting to the 5-6 year old mark. I guess you wont have to worry about the rattles, but you will be replacing the timing belt on your new car anyway.
But good luck anyway, as long as you look after this car and treat it well, it will last alot longer than the TR will, but thats mainly due to it being half the age.

I would be doing this too. By trading it you will get rid of your old car easily and even if you get only $500 for it those dollars can go to your on road costs, etc... Im just thinking how hard it might be selling the TR privately and how much money you might spend doing this. I would also be trying to talk a deal that the dealer do the timing belt for you as well within the price.

mate if u dun look properly, you'd be spending more on repair bills than paying off your debt, take your time to find a car mate, it took me a long time before i found mine. no point being a hard nut, cars will be cars, you'll never know about their faults till you own them.
*edit* interesting price for a newish car and lowish mileage, whats the catch? sorry i'm sceptic

Im guessing its only the 3litre version?
and for rest of you guys, although redbook is generally lower take a look at this for your info..
For 3litre verison..
Prices based on km 90,000 - 150,000
Trade in price guide* $5,100 - $6,300
National average price - private sale* $6,800 - $8,900
and 3.5L
Prices based on km 90,000 - 150,000
Trade in price guide* $5,800 - $7,000
National average price - private sale* $7,600 - $9,800
So not an OVERLY underpriced car or anything to be majorly sceptical about...
Erik why not try and get your car trade in.. and get them to knock some extra off the price and or possibly same price and have them fix the problems?

Yeh sometimes i regret buying the new car, then i take it for a spin and all is forgiven :D.
Erik, that colour looks awful in the photos, and i'd get someone to take a good look at the car before you buy it. Could be something very wrong with it.

Erik, man....WTF are you on about this time????
Every week you post your new ride.....
Every week you ask for ppls opinions....
Every week we tell you our thoughts and doubts.....
Every week you come up with something newer and something that makes it harder for me to follow your thoughts....
No offense mate.....
JUST BUY A CAR AND POST IT WHEN YOU HAVE IT!!
- All other evetualities have been dealt with in your previous Threads!

if the contracts subject to finance then ur protected if u dont get the loan, but u could be without a car if u sell the TR first. be careful Erik!

cause then theres no room to negotiate.
nothing wrong with asking more than what u hope to get. both parties walk awy happy.

And if you ask too much more than what you should be, people will not bother to look at it.
