Hey all,

im going skiing this year and as ill be driving up mountains every day I figured I should get something done to my suspension. I currently have stock, and am thinking of getting some KYB Shocks + King Lows all round.

What sort of ride does this offer over stock? Also Coilovers are obviously the best choice but I cant really justify $2k on them. But how much better ride are coilovers over the KYB/King option?

The biggest benefit will be going from Stock to Kings springs and KYB shocks. It will make the ride lower and firmer, which is great for cornering and overall better feel on the road.

Going to coilovers is better again, but no-where near of an improvement over KYB/kings setup. So, from my experience, go Kings and KYB!

How long are you going skiing for ?

Personally, i wouldnt worry about changing your suspension just for a skiing trip.

Change your Suspension, according to your everyday needs....

**Also remember, cars that are too low cannot use Snow Chains.

i agree, that makes it one expensive snow trip.

i have coilovers and they are really good, but I went for them becuse i wanted to be able to change thei height as i have an extream driveway. and also going from the standard ralliart set up fiogured if i was going to spend money on something that was already ok i would get as good as i could. and haven't looked back. still happy mothsn after getting them.

Thanks guys, I guess ill go with the KYB + kings setup.

Obviously im not changing it JUST for the ski trip, I just thought it would be an apropriate time to do so seing as it would be a week of going up and down a mountain so it would be a good time to do it beforehand.

I think ill go place my order with Phillconn Rally now.

Quick question, King lows all round on a 98 TF, I dont want my ride stupidly low, I value the underside of my car. Ive heard lows give about a 30mm drop? That doesn't sound like much (which is good)

lows will drop your car 45mm, super low at the front (no rear available) will drop it 60mm.
I have low SP's which drop the car 30mm. I had to though otherwise my insurance would be void. If insurance wasn't an issue i'd have gone lows all round.

yeah i would only go as low as kings on the front of a 3L because if you ever want to get pacemakers, they sit stupidly low.

i have a 3L with pacies and lows on the front and they have hit on occasions where i'v forgotten about them ! Lol

Hmm do Lows drop that much do they? Hnnn

Not sure how that would look with stock rims, like I said, I don't want TOOO low

i have lovells superlows and i found my ride was really nice with stock VRX shocks compared to anothyer mates with kings lows/superlow combo with KYB's.

both are alright IMO. i know u dont have the VRX but just having my input.

and you know this because you've gone from KYB/kings to coilovers, didnt like them, and then then put KYB/kings back in?

I think he is saying that,

say going from stock to KYB/kings gives a 80% improvement on handling, coilovers then give a FURTHER 15 % improvement. In other words, coilovers ARE the best, but the difference between KYB's and Coilovers is not as great as the difference between Stock and KYB's. Get it?

I understood what you ment, and apparently so did two other people who've posted in this thread....... so I think someone was just trying to be difficult.

You all know my opinion on this subject:
Coilovers FTW!!!!!!

Oh snap.

I just sent the money to phillcom then realised what you just said. Im hopeing when I tell my insurance company they wont say that Low's all round is TOO low and void me.

Im with GIO, 3rd party only. Hopefully they won't mind :doubt:

3rd party probably wouldn't matter so much.

King Springs Lows are a 40mm drop. You could just tell them you lowered the car 30mm and if they ever check it for any reason it merely sagged, thats what happens over time.

3rd party probably wouldn't matter so much.
why not? its still insurance..

nah its all good, spoke to a member here 'Jay' who works for GIO and he said they will probably up the excess but not care so much as to void me, which is all that really matters really.

If they were really anal, all they'd have to do was check the serial number on the springs.

His actual insurance only covers damage to other parties, i'd say if he was in an accident the other persons insurance company would be more concerned with the springs then his would be.

Well I've gone Lovell's Sport Low in my car (awaiting delivery from Phillcom Rally) and looking at the Lovell's website it says 25-40mm. I am hoping my insurance company doesn't chuck a spastic about it. (AAMI)

I registered & insured the car under mums name with me as a driver, so I'm hoping they wouldn't be too anal looking at the car in the case of a claim as it looks otherwise stock. I am going to get mum to call the insurance company and just tell them there has been sports suspension fitted and that can be that.

It's a gamble but eh...

Update: Im now on kings Low's

What sort of time period am I looking at for everything to settle in? Im happy with how low it is but it should get a bit lower over the next couple days yeah?

Ride is improved thats for sure

Hey lachlan... would you be able to post another pic from a different angle that shows light on the front tyre. I'm tryin to convince my old man that King lows aren't ridiculous and I'm interested to see how low the front guard looks :)

Are they skyline rims btw?

Lachlan56
24-06-2006, 09:23 PM
Skyline rims? I doubt it :P they are just the stock 15's that came with the car..*shrugs*

wait up ill post a pic of the front

So far only problems ive had with height clearance have been from the Mud Flaps. As you can see, they hang very low and scrape on almost every speed hump ive gone over. I think Ill remove them tomorrow.

Hey thanks for that... would it be too much to ask for one more pic  A side on like the first but in the light where you can see the full car with light on the front tyre/guard - I'm tryin to decide on superlows or just plain old lows for the fronts.

Thanks heaps

I had KYB Shocks & Lovells Low Springs put in today (Thanks to Phillcom Rally for the parts) and I'm extremely happy with the slightly lower look, but most of all the heavily reduced body roll. I am also impressed by the fact the ride is not harsh, it's basically the same as stock, but with better handling.

Ty lachlan that middle pic is what I'm after...

Looks pretty much low enough for me - gotta convince pop to let me put kings all round, wish me luck

Piv, if he is worried about the height, tell him he shouldnt be. I have some pretty visious speed humps at work, no dramas with them so far. Like I said, the only problem with scraping was due to the mudflaps, which took a whole 10 minutes to remove
