Not happy... not happy at all... Well, it's bearable...

I have a tiptronic transmission in my Magna... The only problem is, Mitsubishi decided to make the gear change backwards...... Well, to me it seems backwards...

To upshift, you have to push the stick forwards, and to downshift, pull it back... It sorta just annoys me as I feel that it's natural to pull to upshift and push to downshift... Makes more sense to me...

I was wondering if anyone know anything about these transmissions... It'd probably just be changing the circuit around slightly, but I really don't have much of an idea of where to start to make the conversion.. Anyone done it before??

I'm not sure if this is the same gearbox from the FTO, but on a FTO website (www.mivec.co.uk) in the FAQ section i found this:

STEP 1 Remove the rubber "packing" around the shift knob. Next, remove the cigarette lighter and ashtray.

STEP 2 Remove the shift knob. The button on the shift knob is fixed by two hooks. Push these hooks and remove the shift button. Locate the spring and remove it. There is a rubber cap under this spring, pull it out. Next you can see a nut (12mm) under the pushable rod. Remove this nut. You can then pull out the shift knob.

STEP 3 Remove the centre console panel which is fixed at 4 points: (1) the side of shift knob (2) the other side of 1 (3) the upper-side of the ashtray (4) the other side of 3. Remove these points, carefully. They should just pull out.

STEP 4 Remove the centre box panel. Pull up and remove the cup holder. You should see 2 nuts, remove them. There are 4 nuts in the centre box, remove them, then remove the centre box panel.

STEP 5 Change [+][-] labels around - remove and change carefully. Take care!

STEP 6 Change [+][-] switch. Looking at the left side of shift knob, you will see the micro switch and 4 cables. Cable 1 and cable 2 do not need to be touched. You must switch cables 3 and 4 over

STEP 7 Put it back together in the reverse order!

Ahhh great great... Should be the same transmission I think.... =)

Last thing before I start chopping up things, will this void the waranty on the car? I'm thinking yes, but hoping no =/

Then it's on the right way.

The dash gear display has the lower gears displayed as going down - so this matches the lever that gets pulled to the rear - that's how I think anyway.

nah... Personally, it just feels wrong....

I mean, when you accelerate, you're pulled back into your seat, so the gear change should have a pulling on the stick... and when you down shift for something like engine braking, you'd want to push the stick.... Well, me anyway...

I think it's a little more of a precautionary thing since I think habitually I might one day pull instead of push.... "It's something you only muck up once at 6000rpm...." someone said...

Well, I tried taking it apart a little, nothing too big, but found some parts are stuck and I can feel what seems to be a few wires under the panel... I don't want to snap them if I lift it up... I'm not in too much of a rush, so I'm sorta being extra-precautionary and at the moment since the car half scares me (I'm not sure how... but it does...)

I'll let you know if I get it figured out...

Doesnt mattter... stuff it up at 6000 and you have the joys of a rev limiter to help you out :) not gonna break anythin

Good news =)

Just thinking though, couldn't downshifting at high rpm cause a loss in traction in some cases?

anyway... Anyone got any idea on the waranty issue??

I manual shift my auto magna and if it is anything like that it wont actually let you downshift unless it is at a safe rpm. I am pretty sure the whole tiptronic setup is the same sort of setup as a normal auto with a more convenient shifter for up and down shifting.
