Been bothering me for bloody ages, but always forgot to ask, the TJ sports is supposed to have 163kW due to the free flowing exhaust...but something seems weird here...

TJ series 1 - Standard 3.5 = 150kW
TJ series 2 - Standard 3.5 = 155kW

now add roughly 8kW to each of these models and shoudnt you get 158kW in the Series 1 and 163 for the S2????

Probably ecu tune. Most likely deliberately held back for the first model so they could show an improvement in the next model year.

is that across the entire range or just the execs/solaras etc not including sports and vrx?

Prolly just execs etc, the mainstream models. Look at holdens they do it all the time with very little if any hardware changes. I could be completely wrong though.

Nope tippy in the exec came in s2 (maybe even s1.5) and is a 4 speed, though the s1 and s2 sports are 5 speed tippys :P.
The th 3.5 is only 147kw, figure that out! lol.
I'd say it's just a de-tune, alot of manifacturers do it.

Nope, you're right.

The VR-X always had the full kit and kaboodle. It's differences were applied to series 1.5's and series 2's.

The 3.5's went from the 147 to the 150 with a cam revision and then to the 155 with an ecu update. The torque increase and delivery was the bigger difference. I think there was also a 152 or 153 that I saw somewhere but I'm not sure if it was a typo or not.

Tj2 tiptronic is actually 4 speed + overdrive.
Sometimes you can notice 4th coming in under certain load/torque requirements

I have a 4spd tippy in my TJII and haven't noticed an "overdrive".

Technically, the 5 speed is 4 with overdrive and a lockup clutch on the torque converter.

lol are we really discussing a couple of fly wheel kw's LOL

at end of the day the differneces between 2 cars made one after anothewr would negate such tiny tiny gains anyways i think

Allrighty then... Here goes,
The 4 speed auto in ALL gen 3's equiped with a V6 engine has the ratios;
1st. 2.842
2nd. 1.495
3rd. 1.000
4th. 0.731 Notice that the 4 gear is an "overdrive"

The 5 speed auto has the ratios;
1st. 3.789.............( This ratio is why they pull so well of the line! :))
2nd. 2.057
3rd. 1.421
4th. 1.000
5th. 0.731 Notice that 5th is the overdrive gear and 4th isnt.

This isnt correct as all of the 4 speed tiptronic boxes have the same ratios as the regular "T-Bar" shifter equipped 3rd gens. So a 4 speed box + overdrive would be the 5 speed box. When you say you feel 4th coming in under certain load/torque requirements i think that you mean you feel the lock-up torque converter locking and unlocking while it is still in 4th gear. Unless in the above quote you are talking about a Sports,VRX or one of the Veradas equipped with a 5 speed auto.

The 5 speed manual has the same ratios doesn't it?

The 3.5 has a taller 1st gear which unfortunately isnt the gearbox that i have...:cry:

3.0 5 spd man...............................3.5 5spd man;

1st. 3.583.....................................1st. 3.333
2nd. 2.015....................................2nd. 2.015
3rd. 1.407.....................................3rd. 1.407
4th. 1.031.....................................4th. 1.031
5th. 0.804.....................................5th. 0.804

Every one if the other ratios is the same even right down to the final drive which is 3.736. Remember we are talking V6's here and not 4 cyls. :D
