View Full Version : Significantly higher fuel consumption after service
I have a 93 TR at around 150,000kms and just had a service totaling almost $500. Before the service, I could get around 650 per tank of petrol but after the service, I found myself struggling to hit 550 a tank. I drive from Melbourne to Geelong everyday and its pretty constant so I'm sure it has nothing to do with the driving techniques. Below are the services done:
Sump Plug Washer $2.50
Engine Oil $22.00
Fuel Filter $31.60
Air Filter $38.90
4 x Spark Plugs $20.00

How many trips have you done since the service? The computer may have just been reset, and it takes a while to relearn the optimum fuel mix for your driving.
Or I could be way off.

probably changed to a different type of spark plugs, the rest would definately improved (minutely); 550kms is pretty normal for the v6

They probably reset the ECU...You'll have to just drive around and bear with it for a while till it adjusts back to its old settings.

nah. mine isnt the V6. I've done roughly 1500kms since the service i reckon. hopefully it will return to the old consumption soon. the petrol's hitting 1.40 a litre. Thanks for that guys.

$40 for an air filter?
there like $20 at super cheap....
sorry just wanted to point that out.

I wouldn't buy those Valvoline air filters, some of them look way too fuzzy! :doubt:
Put 2 side by side (same box, same model) and the filter material was different - jeez
I don't think much about their quality control either.
I go Ryco, never any complaints.
Pricewise, think they're $30+ for the square Valvoline aren't they?
The Ryco #1359 is $41 last time I checked at Autobarn.
4 x Spark Plugs $20.00
A/C Belt
The only things that can affect fuel consumption is..
1) spark plugs not gapped correctly (possibly too small).
My 4cyl Astron used to like 0.9-0.95mm... as big as you can without engine pinging.
2) New belt fitted too tight
3) spark plug possibly not tightened fully
4) plug lead/s could need renewing

is it a carby or efi model?
check the fuel filter for leakage.
To bad you don't live in Adelaide, i would of done that service for about $200.00

Mine's a EFI model by the way. There was also a C.V. boot change on top of those. sorry for missing it.
I guess when you know nuts about the car, you gotta trust them to give you the right price and not to try to rip you off. Well, i though they seem to be an honest bunch of lads when I went there. Guess I could be wrong huh? hahaha. I'll see how the car goes over the next 1000kms.
Be heading down to Gold Coast soon. Gotta change those rear tyres and after a search through the threads, I've decided to go for the Bridgestone RE92. Many have used that and recommended that. And also, how much will it cost roughly to change the front brake pads? am I looking at $150 plus labour? Anyone know where to rent chains if I'm looking to head to Thredbo on my way down? Petrol Stations? This is gonna burn a hole in my pocket no doubt.. damn.

did you check the fuel filter for leaks, i think its on the right hand side on the firewall on 4 cyl next to the brake booster, it black color.

you have a new fuel filter now, which means that there is no crap in there to prevent the fuel from getting through so it has a higher flow rate. my fuel economy went down a bit after i changed my fuel filter.

$150 i would think would be the maximum. you will probably get charged 1hr labour, plus about 50-60 for the pads. look around at supercheap and repco for some good pads at a decent price, buy them yourself, and then ring around and get prices on fitting. it will only take them 1/2 and hour to fit.
This is not my first time asking I think but whenever I ask for where to rent chains, it just gets ignored. Is it really that difficult to find one? I went up last year without chains not knowing what I was in for, and I would say I almost lost my life there.

They're everywhere down there, but having always been a passenger in the car, have never paid any attention to how much it costs. I think most people get theirs at Cooma or thereabouts, think it's a bit cheaper than further towards the snow.
[EDIT]A brief search shows you're looking at maybe between $10-20 a day for chain hire, depending on how long you get them for.

My tr had higher fuel consumption when i got my fuel filter changed, maybe the freer flowing fuel line now supplies more fuel, i noticed a slight increase in power when mine was done, but then the fuel economy went down.

Thanks alot for the information. cheers

yeah. there was a slight increase in power no doubt. gotta drive like a nanny for the time being. lol
sorry to re-open the thread. I read some previous threads that once the ECU is reset, it will start to adapt or optimise to your driving style. If I was driving it quite hard after the service, does that mean it will start start to optimise to that particular driving style? I'm asking this because the fuel consumption is not going down still. Do I have to try to reset it again perhaps?

Yes and no, it will "adapt" to your aggresive driving style, but if you drive carefully again it will re-adapt. Shouldn't take too long to do.
Economy that bad i would have to say definitely isn't ecu related. Have you tried a new O2 sensor?
I'll bring it to the mechanics for a check on the O2 sensor.
