Aye
Ive got a '93 TR and just in the last week my gearbox has become a buggar and wonderin if anyone can give us an idea. When I accelerate the box will shudder really badly feels as if the cogs aren't grabbing properly if I push on the accelerator any more than really really softly. I know it probably needs a new transmittion but at this point Im hoping to get rid of the car at the end of its rego in october and upgrade to a TE/TF so Im wonderin if anyone knows how I can squeeze a few months out of a rooted gearbox?

if its manual it seems to be doin what mine did, but i had a weird problem, my flywheel was ****ed, it looked like someone took to it with a crowbar, so i doubt it would be this..........but then again, theres always a chance

Its an auto box. Has 210000 on the clock. I'll give the overdrive off a try, I've never really fiddled with it and also the 're-learn' thing. Cheers I get back and see how that does

Also the oil is a sort of orange colour.

Took it for a drive without O/D and no difference so did the relearn gig mitsu-tech posted and it ran good for a short drive but then started to go back to shuddering. but on the way home I turned O/D off and it did run alot better but it still shudders when under load like going up a hill on take offs.

Hey mate, the oil in the transmission should be red, I would suggest a Flush out and get them to check the bands etc, tell them what problems your having, they'll know - I suggest finding someone who does only Transmissions.
Also I find my gearbox drives alot better with O/D off, A/T off and just as normal.
Most people drive with O/D on all the time, the band will get wrecked theres specific times only when to use it (try a thread search if interested)
The Auto's on Magna's are NOT the greatest built, but if looked after with regular services just like the engine should last a long time.
Good Luck

is it a V6 or 4 pot? it may be missing under load. my commodore did it when it lost a coil pack. it was fine till it went into O/D.

also could be electrical system, when was the last time the spark plugs/leads were changed?

Im beginning to think its electrical rather than mechanical. It does very much need a fluid change but at times it runs fine with out problems then later on the same day it shudders under the slightest load and comes almost undriveable. A mate suggested the coils. Im gunna start small and test a different set of leads to the spark plugs cause I remembered a mate having a similar problem but it was on a excel so it didn't come to mind. I'll get back after I test that

well if its the engine running rough under load get it to do it at night and get a mate to look at the leads in the dark, while you put the engine under load and you should beable to see spark jumping from the weak leads. (make sure your mate stands to the side of the car and not in front of it.lol )

Similar to my prob, except i think mine is worse :bowrofl:.
Mines fuel and electrical. Need an injector and TB clean + dizzy cap and rotor replaced (did dizzy and rotor a couple days ago, and have doubts about how well the TB was cleaned), AND the timing adjusted by someone with a timing light that works more than 3 flashes. Stupid cheap k-mart crap.
Hang on ill grab the link to mine.

Im sure after the fact mine could probably do with fresh ATF and a AT service.
