It is driving me crazy.. Reception on 101.7 and 106.5 (the two I mostly listen to when using radio) in Sydney is so crappy..
AM is perfect but FM reception has static on it that kinda appears every second or so for a brief moment then goes away.. Listening to it it kinda sounds like it is fluttering with static. Does this make sense? It only seems to happen while driving but sometimes it occurs when stopped - and if you move a little it goes away.
It doesn't happen with a local station to me (Penrith) so it must be something to do with sensitivity or reception strength me thinks..
I've tried cleaning the arial but hasn't made any difference.. What do you guys reckon is the best way to troubleshoot this - the car is still under warranty but when I spoke to the dealer they said it was "normal" so I figure i'm going to have to fight them.. But then again.. maybe it is normal?
Thanks guys
Have u had a aftermarket stereo fitted? Maybe someone wasnt gentle with the aerial plug and now its a bit stuffed inside, hence the shit reception.....
If not, then its probably normal. Some times u get shitty reception around powerlines, big-buildings.....etc.....

No.. It is stock... As far as I can tell it has never been removed. The aerial looks to be in good condition too (a slight bend in it but that's all).
My last two cars never had this problem in the same area so I figure it must be the radio or something..

i m in the penrith area and my TJ has similiar poor reception, i just think the HU has a weak receiver...
had that with 101.7 GROOOOOVE fm and my fix was to lift the antenna up!!
but it looks gay up!! so i put it down and started listening to tapes/cd's
there are FM booster's that u can buy,
they are from supercheap or auto barn, where ever ya get ya parts from
just plug in and should work
.. maybe it is normal?
hmm - i dont think so - i bought mine last week (same model) - and everything is crisp
maybe check contacts behind the dash?

What area of Sydney are you in? I find it gets bad out west but in the city it isn't too bad at all..
Thanks
Chris.

I've managed to get a bit more info out of the dealer...
Apparently the MY02 TJ's radio's have a problem picking up crap from the engine and there is a filter mitsu will fit under warranty if you are having this problem. Am getting one fitted..
Not sure if it will fix my problem because I am not picking up crap from the engine - it seems to be location based.. eg. I can be stopped at lights with static on radio - move 1 metre and it goes away).
I don't know how they are going to fix a weak receiver with a filter - but at least they are now trying instead of just telling me to clean the aereal..

actually i have noticed the bad reception in my car as well, alot of noise
my Old TH had a very good reception and i never opened the antena more than half way up.
But my TJ sports , got auto antena , but the reception is just bad.
I will check with my mitsu dealer tommorow (if i had time)
hmm - i take it back (my previous post saying i had no problem) - it crackles and pops. i just never heard it with the stock h/u - as i never turned it up. with the new pioneer h/u - i can head the noise - very annoying.
do you think they'll have a bitch about putting the filter in if i have an aftermarket h/u?

You could always try... Maybe tell them it was so bad that you changed the HU and still have the same problem.
Worst case they might force you to hook up the old one?
Mine is going in on Tuesday at Penrith Mitsubishi.. If you like i'll let you know how it goes and if all works i'll give you the guys name. I Figure if they acknowledge and fix mine then they should do yours..
Which stock HU did you have.. Mine is the TYPE 1 HU (CD/Radio) on the 2001 TJ Advance (But car is built in October so the model is MY02)...
They should be the same between August 01 until when the series II came out in 02 (I think after june 02)

Ok... An Update..
After mutch stuffing around the dealership ended up telling me "sorry.. that's just the way it is".. The filter is for previous car's.. The "filter" in the TJ's are "built in".
Not wanting to take no as an answer (For a $37K car I think you can expect a bloody radio that works) I had a chat to one of the other guys there and it appears that they quite regulary change radios (he said they had done 100ish in the past 8 months) due to various problems..
And apparently Mitsubishi are having a workshop with clarion (I think that how you spell it) early next year to sort out the problem with radios in the mitsu range. I'm told that if I hang out long enough I "might" be able to get it replaced with one if the new radios - if it works out that way. Getting it replaced now would probably mean i'd get another crappy one.
This is good i suppose because at least there appears to be a widespread problem in the head units mitsu are supplying and it isn't just mine.
Will let you know how I go.
Am waiting to hear from the service manager.
i dont think its just the h/u actually - as i've changed mine and still the same problem :(
